This article is in the series "SkiTalk Live with Dan Egan"
In this episode, host and extreme skiing pioneer Dan Egan is joined by
  • Justin Koski, executive director, US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame
  • James Niehues, ski trail map artist and recent Hall of Fame inductee
  • Phil Pugliese, cofounder/owner, SkiTalk.com
Episode 1 covers the efforts of the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame to remain active and viable during the crazy year of 2020. Class of 2019 Hall of Fame inductee James Niehues is on hand to reminisce and answer questions about his long and remarkable career as a trail map artist. The group takes interactive queries from the listening audience, and this episode also features two videos.

Justin Koski explains that the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in Ishpeming, MI, is alive and well, but needs your support. The Hall plans to do a virtual induction of new 2020 members. A video is shown recapping a past Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Salt Lake City. Phil Pugliese provides an overview of the partnership between his site, SkiTalk.com, and the Hall of Fame to promote fundraising auctions of one-of-a-kind ski-related items celebrating the sport and its heritage, items such as paintings by legendary trail map artist James Niehues.

James discusses his career and shares a video detailing his map-making process involving aerial photos and perspective drawings. He reminisces about highlights including his first professional trail map and his toughest ski maps. His clients may be ski areas, but his consumers are skiers and snowboarders, and James recognizes his maps are the stuff dreams are made of.

About author
Philpug
I started skiing in the mid-70s in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania; from then on, I found myself entrenched in the industry. I have worked in various ski shops from suburban to ski town to resort, giving me a well-rounded perspective on what skiers want from their gear. That experience was parlayed into my time as a Gear Review Editor and also consulting with manufacturers as a product tester. Along with being a Masterfit-trained bootfitter I am a fully certified self proclaimed Gear Guru. Not only do I keep up with the cutting edge of ski gear technology, but I am an avid gear collector and have an extensive array of bindings as well as many vintage skis.
