Two-time Olympic gold medalist and five-time World Alpine Ski Champion Ted Ligety shares the secrets of a perfect ski turn as he announces a new partnership with Carv (www.getcarv.com), the world's first training system that measures your skiing in real time.

A magnetic personality on the snow, Ted has been a respected provocateur, spending his life perfecting the ski turn, reshaping the technique used across the sport and winning medals in the process. Ligety developed a revolutionary technique on the snow that made him unbeatable. He now wants to help skiers across the world improve their technique and ski expertise as part of his partnership with Carv, the world's most powerful digital ski coach.

Ted said:
"It’s my mission to make skiing more accessible and fun. I’ve spent my whole career pushing the limits of what’s possible on skis, and with this partnership I have put that experience into a program that most skiers can follow. Our goal was to develop a real-time coaching experience that helps a wide range of skiers make the kind of turns they could only dream of.”

“I’ve been amazed by the accuracy of the Carv system, but also how the Carv technology helps skiers around the world through digital coaching,”

“What is particularly exciting is that we have been using Carv’s database of 200 million turns to look at how skiers will respond to the training, using specific metrics to measure and teach the perfect turn.”

Carv’s Train with an Olympian program is designed to take the average skier all the way from an intermediate to an Olympic level turn, with personalised coaching from Ted along the way. The programme includes:
  • Move through increasingly challenging levels to develop your technique
  • Real-time audio coaching, drills and concepts, built by Ted, giving you the advice of a master, every step of the way.
  • You can even compare your turns to data captured from Ted’s own skiing to see how close you can get to the famous Olympian’s turn.

CEO Jamie Grant says: “We are always looking to find the world’s best coaching advice and bring it to our members. We couldn't be more excited to work with Ted - he’s changed the game as an athlete and now he’s able to change the game as a coach by combining his ideas with the Carv platform. We are excited to blend the power of Carv’s real-time feedback with Ted’s incredible expertise to create our best training programme yet.”

Carv is the world’s most powerful digital ski coach (and now the world’s biggest ski school by hours taught). Skiers can subscribe to Carv from $199 a year plus the $199 one-off device cost. This includes unlimited access to Ted’s training, Carv’s groundbreaking real-time audio coaching, video coaching and library off-snow content.

What is Carv?
Carv is the world’s most powerful digital ski coach, praised by The FT, NYT and The Times.

Carv consists of ultra-thin inserts (concealing 72 pressure and motion sensors) fit into any ski boot and a coaching membership that is delivered via the Carv app.

13 different metrics are measured on every turn, including Balance, Edge Angle, Turn Shape and Outside Ski Pressure, giving Carv skiers an objective way to analyse their technique.

Skiing with Carv is like having a world-class ski instructor in your ear. Carv gives you real-time audio feedback during each turn, personalised skiing tips on each chairlift and detailed analysis every time you stop. Carv members also get access to videos, articles, drills and workouts, made with the world’s best ski instructors so you can improve your skiing, on and off the mountain.

Carv is an official partner of the Professional Ski Instructors of America, and the Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance.

Who is Ted ligety
Ted Ligety, a Park City, Utah local, has been skiing since he was two years old.

In 2003, Ted joined the U.S. Ski Team and his career took off. He became an overnight sensation, winning Olympic gold in the alpine combined at Torino in 2006 aged only 21. After that he went on to podium in all major FIS Ski World Cup events, including slalom, giant slalom, alpine combined, super-G and downhill. Ted Ligety is still the only American man to win two Olympic gold medals in Alpine skiing.

Ted has been a disruptive force in the industry, reshaping the style of his turn, creating a wide margin between him and the competition. His magnetic personality and passion for engaging generations of skiers continues to leave its mark on the industry. He is partnering with Carv to bring olympic-level coaching to every skier on the mountain.

Also new to the 22/23 membership

Carv Video Coach - With 13 different metrics measured on every turn, Carv is the most accurate analytics system available to skiers. But we wanted to take it one step further this year. New for this season, Carv will be breaking out of the ski boot. Members will now be able ask anyone to record video of their skiing (the video-taker doesn’t need to be a member), overlay their Carv data (synchronised frame by frame) and share their best turns on social media.

CEO Jamie Grant says: “Our mission is to unlock the thrill of a great turn for as many skiers as possible. We’ve spent years making this incredible analytics tool, but people learn faster by seeing what’s happening. We wanted our skiers to be able to match the data from Carv with a visual of how they look. We have built this incredibly powerful coaching system where you can match the feeling of a great turn with your Ski:IQ and see where you skied at your best. But maybe the best part is you can really claim those bragging rights by sharing it with your friends.”

The app is available to download today and a Carv membership + the device are available for purchase at getcarv.com

I started skiing in the mid-70s in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania; from then on, I found myself entrenched in the industry. I have worked in various ski shops from suburban to ski town to resort, giving me a well-rounded perspective on what skiers want from their gear. That experience was parlayed into my time as a Gear Review Editor and also consulting with manufacturers as a product tester. Along with being a Masterfit-trained bootfitter I am a fully certified self proclaimed Gear Guru. Not only do I keep up with the cutting edge of ski gear technology, but I am an avid gear collector and have an extensive array of bindings as well as many vintage skis.

Anyone tried the Carv system? I have watched a lot of the Carv videos and they are great. Wondering about the Carv boot insert and how much room the footbed takes up
I watch those videos too, and that is why I am thinking of buying it.

There are quite a few threads on the forums about CARV. If you like the CARV videos, you should check out Big Picture Skiing, since Tom Gellie does a lot of great videos and is a CARV partner/instructor. The boot insert takes up about 3mm (when you get them fit, a 3mm spacer works for a heat mold). I am not a bootfitter but I've moved them around between a few pairs of boots and needed more or less modification depending on the volume of the boot.

Is there a SkiTalk discount for CARV?
@Philpug

Not a SkiTalk specific one but here's a $50 off coupon if you're looking for one (referral code): https://getcarv.com/refer/9a39ae08-...&utm_campaign=referral&utm_content=sharesheet

I'm a mega fan and posted my review here: https://www.skitalk.com/threads/carv.8407/page-15#post-725442

I skied alone for an entire season with no instructors aside from Carv. I was a beginner who could barely do parallel turns, just trying to learn so I could ski with my son who was taking classes. My first "IQ" scores were in the 80s (average is ~110) and I was skidding everything. At the end of the season my scores were in the 140s (max is ~160) and I was confidently carving with near 80 degree edge angles on blues. I owe it all to Carv that gave me very unexpectedly good tips (ex: raise outer edges up instead of digging inner edges in). It also showed me objectively that I was not leaning forward as much as I would've sworn I was. Really valuable stuff IMO and I highly recommend it for the beginner to intermediate skier.

System makes sense. Bodie Miller had a startup with a similar product and then it just disappeared so I assume it did not happen.

I found a 3mm grind on the bootboard does the trick.
I kind of want to do this right now before the season starts to my new boots. We fit the boots but I think could benefit from that extra couple of mm vertical volume.

Pretty reasonably priced methinks. Way cheaper than in-person instruction. Looks like it's aimed at frontside groomer/racer type skiers. Not my bag, but I like the technology.

They came today! The way they were packaged I felt like I was opening a box of fine chocolates!
