This article is in the series "SkiTalk Live with Dan Egan"
In this episode, host and extreme skiing pioneer Dan Egan is joined by
  • Mike Hattrup, famed skier and product manager, Fischer
  • Ian Harvey, US brand manager, Toko
  • Justin Koski, executive director, US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame
  • Phil Pugliese, cofounder/owner, SkiTalk.com
Dan Egan and Phil Pugliese lead discussions in this episode ranging from the demise of Powder magazine to the key trends and factors affecting the upcoming season. Ian Harvey chimes in with the latest developments in recreational and racing ski wax products and shares a how-to video on Toko's liquid paraffin spray wax. Justin Koski provides commentary on the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. This episode includes a video clip from the classic ski film Blizzard of Aahhh's featuring special guest Mike Hattrup.

If you are lamenting the fall 2020 loss of Powder and Snowboarder magazines, come to the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame Museum in Ishpeming, MI. Justin says the museum archives contain 100 yr of back issues of various ski-related magazines. Also, the Hall of Fame plans to do a live ceremony for both the 2019 and 2020 classes of inductees in April 2021 at Snowmass, CO. Ian describes a brouhaha in the world of FIS skiing involving a ban on fluorinated waxes due to environmental reasons. It is not clear that the FIS has sufficient tests and screening to ensure equitable compliance. The choice of ski wax can be the difference between winning and losing, and the ban may be postponed until effective protocols are developed.

This episode concludes with a nice long video clip of the legendary Chamonix sequence from the Blizzard of Aahhh's. Mike reminisces about the shoot, and you will be amazed to hear about his off-piste extreme ski experience, or lack thereof, prior to appearing in this film

Philpug
I started skiing in the mid-70s in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania; from then on, I found myself entrenched in the industry. I have worked in various ski shops from suburban to ski town to resort, giving me a well-rounded perspective on what skiers want from their gear. That experience was parlayed into my time as a Gear Review Editor and also consulting with manufacturers as a product tester. Along with being a Masterfit-trained bootfitter I am a fully certified self proclaimed Gear Guru. Not only do I keep up with the cutting edge of ski gear technology, but I am an avid gear collector and have an extensive array of bindings as well as many vintage skis.
