The crowd at the trailhead today was HUGELY preferable to the weekend madness at the ski area:

The riding wasn't half-bad, either!

This is my 2020/21 ski season story to date. 5 days on skis, probably 60 on the bike. Including yesterday. Also included: decidedly *not fat bike content. 170mm Mezzer Expert replacing the Fox 36 Grip 2.

A good time on one of my regular rides today. Snowing lightly, so not ideal for scenery pics. However, even though we're having a bit of a low snow year, at least there is enough now that riding the stairs to the fishing platform is a non-event!

Between stupid cold weather, piles of snow, and a ski trip. I have not gotten to ride my bike in over two weeks. Finally got back out onto the vaguely packed trails and get a ride in on Monday and Tuesday. Good times.

Out avoiding the usual Saturday madness at the ski hill (in the background).

But I suspect the corn was astounding up there!

The light is back.

First ride since like October where I actually got to ride without lights after work. It's a bit bittersweet, I thoroughly enjoy riding at night with my lights, it really adds an extra interesting layer to simple easy ride.

Another ride in the light. We took a new to us trail and made it about half way up to the ridge before running out of time and needing to get back home to our significant others. The trail essentially parallels a creek from the valley floor all the way up to the top of the ridge where it starts about 8 miles from the start of the trail. We started across the valley about 3 miles from it, so our time to climb was a bit limited. We plan to return to this trail for next weeks ride and get to the top of the ridge but start at the base of the creek trail to save time. Lights were required for the descent as the sun had set and darkness was returning.

I got to wear sunglasses on tonight's ride! There appears to have been a dog mushing race on the weekend, the trails were rock hard and there was a bunch of trail marking stuff out. Also a lot of brown streaks.. thankfully frozen. The overflow is starting to encroach on the trails now.. it's so interesting to watch it just sorta appear since you never actually see it liquid and flowing.

I'm going to get my cross bike out of storage and take it for a spin on the mushing trails, hopefully later this week. Trails are ferociously hard packed right now and my 40mm tires on the cross bike should work just fine.

This could be the last real winter-ish ride of the year, based on the long range forecast.

If so, it was a beauty!

And yes, I forgot to bring a water bottle....

@LiquidFeet It's the term we use for describing water that flows up and over the existing ice on a body of water. Typically it refreezes and makes mounds of solid ice but it can also do some weird stuff where it essentially layers new ice with unfrozen water between the layers or it can just rot the existing ice and make for a stupid cold slushy mix. It can be incredibly dangerous because it is occurring at cold temps.. it may be -20 but you might punch through the upper layers of ice and end up calf deep in water that instantly freezes to you and your bike.

In that particular picture, the previous week we rode that trail the ice was a good 3 feet lower in the creek bed. We had not seen any above freezing temps.. so it's just water doing it's thing and overflowing the existing ice. I'm betting that what we are looking at is a solidish water slush mix, seriously dangerous to try to walk or ride over. (we had a bridge over it)

Gonna end my contributions to this thread with my first road ride of the season! Busted out the flat pedal cross bike and picked my way through the puddles and ice to get a ride in after work. See ya next winter fat bike!
