My first morning run down Dan's at Snowbasin. Tried several times to go down Strawberry from Bear Springs, but saw a long line each time.

We had first gondola on Strawberry, got to the top, the doors opened, the gondola stopped, giving us a couple minutes head start. Got first tracks in Strawberry Fields since it had not opened on Saturday. The mountain was already pretty chewed up by our second run where we dropped along the ridge between Strawberry Fields and lower DeMoisy. I really loathe the busy-ness up there anymore. It just feels like a frenzy and it's hard to take in the moment and relax and enjoy it. It feels like a race. Regardless, it was a really fun day with fun people. I skied more places than I have ever ventured--it was so good for me, but by 1 o'clock, I was COOKED. I kept skiing until 2:30 which was probably a bad idea as I could have gotten hurt.
We forgot the GoPro
and forgot to take pictures. Part of the whole feeding frenzy vibe is that it's hard to slow down enough to take pics and take things in. We were also having too much fun chatting and laughing and skiing.
This storm definitely over-delivered for Snowbasin--20+ inches on the snowstake meant well over 2 feet up higher. The masses definitely showed up. I have never seen No Name skied out the way it was, NEVER. Never mind the rest of the mountain, where there was not one square inch of untracked to be found. Gone are the days that you could find untracked for days after a storm.
They released pass prices for next season, up by what, $150? I feel it's overdue, the problem is, the skier experience is going downhill (no pun intended) yet the cost is going uphill. The Epic pass needs to go. Bring back the Mountain Collective if we have to be on a mega-pass. I'm not remotely alone in those sentiments. I sure hope they plan to use some of that added revenue to put a lift in on Strawberry (which has been approved by the Forest Service) and upgrade some of the other lifts. I've heard rumblings that Becker is going to be re-routed and upgraded (???) I fear it's going to run to the top of the Diamond or something, which will forever ruin that gem of real estate that takes a bit to get to.
Another thing I've noticed this year that I've never seen or noticed before is the number of straight line cuts across some of the best not so traveled powder stashes, including the Diamond and also the area off the track to get to the Diamond if you drop skiers right. People traverse across those pitches instead of skiing the fall line, and I'm not really sure where they're going? Is this just a symptom of the straight line culture combined with the inability to buy a turn in powder even on fat skis? Do people not understand the fall line anymore? (I'll venture the answer to that is "yes".) I'd like to order up a Tuesday powder day. It's still busy, but nothing like the weekends. Forecast looks like a taste of spring skiing this week. I'll definitely take advantage and hope for a bit of quietness.
