Quick Ikon update:

- Summit reservations went online today. I checked around noon, and other than this upcoming weekend there were no dates that were full yet. This is the same system as last year where reservations were almost always available the night before or morning of
- Crystal is no longer requiring bus reservations for Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays, those days will be first-come first-served. Friday buses still require reservations for now, although I would not be surprised if that changes

HERE IS THE SEATTLE TIMES article which covers the replacement of the general manager and the situation in general.

It is well worth reading.

He has now asked for his job back at Stevens. He was headed over to Bachelor but decided he could not surpass the ineptness of their managerial staff.

US 2 opened around 10am today, and Stevens opened as well. I got there around 11:15 and parked at lot 4. Maybe only a dozen vehicles at that lot.

First of all, WSDOT has done a great job clearing the highway. There were just a few patches of compact snow on the roadway, otherwise, bare and wet and easy driving. As noted the parking lots at Stevens were pretty empty and the slopes were pretty quiet the whole time I was there. They ran Brooks as there were apparently problems with Skyline, as well as Hogsback, Daisy and (surprise!) Tye Mill. It was pretty much ski right to the lift each run.

Groomers were actually good, off piste was horrible, could barely turn, and it was easy to get stuck. All that light snow absorbed all the rain for the last several days like a sponge and it’s like breakable cement. You start to ski and it’s hard to turn, and if you stop moving you sink about 6-8 inches. I was talking to a patroller and she said it was not a good day to click out of a ski. I witnessed a few boarders who of course have to try to ride off-piste, got stuck and were post-holing their way out of flats and hollows with some difficulty.

Hopefully they can get enough staff hired to open the backside some time this season.

I’m at Summit Central for clinics tomorrow, our group was supposed to meet at Alpental but it was moved to Central due to conditions on the snow. It’s going to be weird until off-piste gets groomed, or covered with sufficient new snow.

Let me know how central is tomorrow. We are at Alpental this weekend as Freeride kicks off for my kids. Given the snow conditions, hoping they did some extra grooming like they have in the past. Thinking I will ski the first half of the day on my AX and switch to my SR95 in the afternoon once it warms up.

Good news-bad news at Bachelor. Summit may open today for the first time this season but Skyliner is down indefinitely.

"Skyliner & Summit Update from John McLeod: Since we originally took Skyliner down due to mechanical failure, we knew this would be a complex repair but were hopeful that the damage was limited to standard, available components. Had this been the case, we had all the parts necessary to have Skyliner back in action for the upcoming weekend. Unfortunately, this week we learned that Skyliner sustained damage to major components that are much harder to replace and may ultimately have to be re-manufactured. Meaning we will be without Skyliner for an indefinite period while we engineer a solution with our Doppelmayr partners."

I'm skiing there next week, Tues-Fri. Skyliner won't affect me much but will be nice if the forecast for good weather holds and I can ski off the top. That's been a 50-50 proposition during my annual trips there the last 8 years.

Today was nice at Mt Hood Meadows. Boy were there a lot of people ... this weekend is going to be crowded for sure -- what with the sunny weather and not.

Today is my birthday, so it's 54 years of skiing and 65 years old today.

Saturday and Monday I'll be at Timberline. Sunday probably Skibowl. I'll be skiing those days with my son and grandsons.

The last 2 days have been sunny and warm skiing at Timberline Lodge. My son, grandsons, and I took the Palmer snowcat up to the top of the iced-over Palmer lift for some very nice skiing.

The last couple of days at Stevens were dreadful. The conditions kept everyone on piste, the crowds were pretty significant, and that left the runs absolutely packed. On the bright side the new GM was out at skyline doing crowd control, the bird stickers made a comeback, and there was a hiring tent in the plaza. There is a ton of hope that Mr. Fortune will change the fortunes of the hill we all love.

Saturday was busy, but MLK day today at Baker was empty. Even with everyone confined to the groomers, still the crowds were sparse. The groomed runs were in decent shape, which by mid afternoon consisted of soft piles among sheets of ice. However, everything off the groomers was still unskiable: refrozen mank from the previous rain cycle. Hopefully more snow soon.

Actually saw lift lines on 2 different chairs at my speed bump 49° North.
Then they started the chairs.
Off piste was truly ugly, we need more snow like everybody else; the groomers rock though.
If you haven't skied here for a while you should. It is a sleeper. Not steep and gnarly and at its best with fresh snow.

Crystal was not bad yesterday. Parking in the morning was a breeze, with no traffic jam up the boulevard and plenty of space. Liftlines weren't too bad either, my longest wait was probably between 10 and 15 min. I don't think Crystal even ran out of parking reservations for today, so really not bad for a holiday.

As for the skiing, some things softened up (and subsequently bumped up), some stayed firm all day. But the real star of the show was the gorgeous sunny weather. 20220117_103142(0).jpg

The place was empty. The only run with people on it was the main run down Tye Mill. Brooks, Hogs, and Daisy were open. Sky had mechanical issues and didn't open till after 12:00. The Visibility kind of came and went but was mostly pretty good. There were some light snow flurries. Off piste was a mixed bag. We tried Blue Trail on Hogs, but the top was only OK, the middle was barely skiable crusty and ruts. Groomers on hogs were OK but just boring groomers. Tye Mill was better. The bump run called Roller Coaster had a couple inches of new snow with smoother bumps, without as many ruts and clumps. On Skyline, the off piste below Windy Knoll had good snow. It was a good day for keeping the legs in shape and it beat sitting home, but just barely.
