C South Coastal Region NASA photos from recent rare cold storms showing before and after. After big wet winters as an old landscape photographer, some March-April years am down in Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve state park and other desert flower fields on long desert road trips. So know that topographic zone well including recognizing within the before capture, the Antelope Buttes of that park. Due north of the s in Los Angeles is large tan Fairmont Butte and to its SW smaller Antelope Buttes. Just Northwest of Fairmont is a dark polygon of a solar cell farm with more smaller black areas north. To the east of there, are patchy dark area of Joshua trees I've often disperse camped in. Great remote high desert dawn-dusk camp zone because of the potential Joshua tree silhouettes. Thus during breezy afternoons may hunt around for prospective trees against sky I might later return to. And as I write, a large zone west of dry Palmdale still under snow! Now Joshua trees covered in rare snow with warm early/late light that as a white even without sun, strongly reflects a brighter landscape so has strong potential. nasa-socal22823b.jpg

I don't think I will be one of them...
I might go Sunday. Dont really want to but not much of a choice now. I'm heading to Denver Monday to ski on their 6" of new snow. Damn, youd think that Colorado would have more snow than Big Bear but Noooo. I'd rather stay home and ski Big Bear but our reservations are already set for next week

I considered Sunday, thinking that things will be a bit closer to normal in terms of roads and services. I know it will be crazy though otherwise...

They are not going to open the roads to the public anytime soon. It’s likely they will resume escorting those stranded down hill back up the mountain this weekend. Right now, they need to keep the roads for emergency vehicles only. We were supposed to drive home on Monday for a couple of weeks but had to cancel. I couldn’t even get a response from a single snow clearance company.

Thx Dave. Love this stuff with the maps to understand the orientation of things and now the outline of the snow!

I think I am going to pass on this weekend, even though the closure order states that valid pass holders for operating resorts are exempt from the order, there is still so much for the community to do to dig out, that I can hold off on being a part of a problem. Godspeed to all in the SB National Forest.
I'm heading to Winter Park Monday. When I booked my trip in October last year, I never dreamed BB would get this much snow. I'd rather ski BB next week instead of CO. From what I can tell, BB will be much better than WP next week

Any word on when the roads will be open to anyone other than residents only?
I keep hearing March 16th, all rumor and conjecture tho. Arctic Circle will be last, not sure if they even started clearing it. There is rain in the forecast too, could make an even worser mess. Check bensweather or socalmountains for updates.

Yeah, I heard about the rain today. Very concerning for residents and their homes, which is the bottom line here tbh. Alterra can take care of itself. Crazy weather this season...
