Well, no pictures of first snow on the Wasatch Range yet. Bald Mountain Pass on Mirror Lake Highway will have to do. Time to start the 2022-2023 Utah thread.
Let the Stoke Begin!

Summer was a scorcher here in Utah, but temperatures are falling now, mornings are cool, and some rain has been falling. Winter cannot get here soon enough!
Bring it on 'triple-dip La Niña,' we need some snow for the 2022 SkiTalk National Gathering in Utah, February 25 - March 4, 2023!!!

Here are some of my favorite pics from last ski season to help with building the stoke!
While we are waiting for snow, let’s see some of your favorite Ski Utah pictures from last season too!

October 24, 2021, Albion Basin at Alta, my first (backcountry) day of the season!

I was on my way home from a bike ride at Deer Valley the other day & decided to risk barging through security check points & see what the1%’rs where up to at Wasatch Peaks. No one shot at me but I didn’t hang around for long.
This was as close as I could get but it is full steam ahead!…

Still hoping it fails & they go public. Some great looking terrain provided it snows. I think the base lift is probably below 6000’.
Lifts appear to go to the center peak in the photos.

Photo recap of my winter 2022 in UT:
I arrived in UT in late January, in time to catch a lengthy period of low snow. The slopes were firm-ish for UT, but would be excellent conditions if in the Mid-Atlantic.

Same type of late January conditions back in Mineral Basin:

Low snow meant high definition moguls in Hot Foot Gulley:

A few weeks later in beautiful Honeycomb Canyon at Solitude. Conditions finally starting to turn around.

The Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake County Council are the latest in a long list of entities and individuals that have voiced their opposition to UDOT's proposed gondola as a solution for traffic congestion in LCC.

“The gondola is not an option for the poor…”?

Even for the Catholic Church this is moronic. Skiing in LCC is not an option for the poor either. There may be good reasons to oppose the gondola - this isn’t one. Let’s poll the Mormons!

The opposition to the gondola by Salt Lake City, Cottonwood Heights, and Salt Lake County could be a big deal in trying to stop the project. They might be able to pass all kinds of laws and ordinances that could potentially stop it with the full support of their local constituents who seem to be overwhelmingly opposed to it.

A minute from the Alta exit off the I-15!
Getting a bit nervous... based on the weather pattern and its lack of changing in the foreseeable future almost certainly no snow on the ground come October 20 :(

Is there something particularly important about October 20th?

No, just saying that as far as the weather models and near-term climate predictions can go (roughly 2 weeks) it looks warm/sunny for that entire period with no pattern change in the foreseeable future.

October snow usually means buried facets later on. Be careful what you wish for ogwink.
I don’t have to think back far to remember November 28, 2019 with warm temperatures & literally no snow the day before.

It ended up being one of the best early seasons I remember with a super stable snowpack & frequent refreshers…

… till a rime event in the middle of February & all hell broke loose in March.

Probably better that way. it's usually better if it makes a hard switch to a snowy winter. Prevents a lot of rotten snow and PWL.

Looks like UDOT considering a $20-30 toll for LCC and BCC during peak hours. That would definitely reduce traffic. They do need to fix their bus system though. I don't mind they are studying tolling but it's super frustrating their doesn't seem to be nearly enough urgency on fixing the bus system.

I've never heard of it!
So I went and looked it up on a map. As often happens when I do that, I realize that I am in a "Snowbird rut" where I ski the same handful of runs over and over. I need to explore more!

Recommended run for the day is always Chip's Run.
