Did Tyrolia abandon the AAAttack2 series for 2021-2022?

Got 14 GWs on both pair of my Ripstick Blacks.

@Philpug what do you mean by “high spring” for the 14 GW?

It is the same binding as the 12, just with a bigger spring. Unless you are skiing the binding at a 10 or more, save the money and go with the 12. If You are skiing that high of a setting, step up to the 17 for a better housing.

@Philpug interesting point. I think there’s a problem with the 12’s spring. They're consistently inconsistent.

My 22 14 GWs and 21 Attack2 13 GWs test true to DIN on a Wintersteiger. Even on previous seasons skis the 13s tested true.

My wife is on 21 Attack2 12 GWs and 22 Attack12 GW. None of which fully test true to DIN. 1 or 2 binding parts per pair of skis tests true, other parts need to be adjusted 1/2 or 1 DIN lower. No rhyme or reason toe vs heel piece.

This is across 3 pair of boots and multiple pairs of skis for her, so I’m fairly certain the Attack 12s springs have something up.

Tyrolia also makes an ST16 and ST16 RD. That would be my choice for a groomer zoomer or high speed ski, which one for me depends on what the difference is other than the spring; I don't need a high DIN setting.

The DIN of the different models tops out over the years at various numbers depending on the year, 14 to 20. Touted features for the STs include Stream toe and Adaptive Suspension technology.

I can't find much about the suspension, but there's a nice video of the toe here:

The AFD height on the Attack2 and the 2022 versions are adjustable, so their 12mm spec is their lowest setting on the Attack 11/12/14/17 GW models but they adjust from 12-15mm(usually around 14mm after adjustment). The AT versions are similar with a 17-22mm adjustment range on their AFD on the toe.

@Philpug Could this be changed on the graph so people don’t think the adjusted Ramp is larger than it is? Thanks!

The Delta, does not change, the AFD does to accomidate the different soles but the Delta is static because the top of the toe lug does not move.

*Now the Salomon Warden 11/13, the AFD is static and the top of the lug adjusts, this can change the delta (slightly)

Bindings with a static AFD height shouldn’t change delta as the boot toe height is not changing. It’s just being held tighter in place/eliminating any play by the lowering toe height down. The floor/AFD height the boot is sitting on isn’t changing.

Bindings with a rising AFD will change the toe height up to a max total height determined by that toe lug but there would be few mm of play of the boot toe between the AFD and that toe lug before adjustment.

Gap between toe lug and boot before adjustment at it’s lowest (12mm) AFD height.

When you “wheelie the toe” to eliminate slack there is then a 2mm plus gap between the AFD and boot now tight against toe lug.

On an typical alpine sole boot in an Attack2 toe, you raise the AFD(and toe height) forward and up 2-2.5 mm(14 to 14.5mm total height) with adjustment to get rid of any play.
Most alpine boots would be too tight against that fixed toe lug to allow for proper release at the AFD max height of 15mm(up 3mm from it’s minimum height).

After raising the AFD up to eliminate slack.

I haven’t set up any GW soles on Attacks to know how much the AFD lifts with those though.

I have 12s and 13s, but have previously avoided the 11 due to the ramp angle difference. Since I don't need the 12 or 13 for DIN, is there any reason I should not consider the 11 now that they have modified the ramp angle?

The Attack 11 still has a lighter, less robust heel piece, so still more of a beginner binding. I’d stay with the Attack2 12 or above still.

Phil,
How does
PRD 12 GW compare to PRD 14 GW?
PRD 14 compare to other top demo (adjustable) bindings?
PRD 14 compare to new 23 Protector (especially heel)?
Purchase PRD 14 now or wait for Protectors?
TIA

@GregK re the AT 14, do you know if the delta would be similar to GW 14 when the AFD is correctly set on both for an alpine din sole, i.e the implied additional delta in Phil's table is due to increased lower range on the AFD to cover the AT norm?

The top of the lug is static in the toe, so the delta will stay the same.

Agree with @Philpug that it should be the same delta but at a higher stand height.

Are you planning to use the bindings with a Touring or WTR sole along with the regular alpine sole? If not, I’d go with a GW Attack binding as there are lots of 13 GW bindings out there on large deals if that’s the reason you’re thinking of a 14 AT.

Thanks guys, I was just about to mount up some AT 14's and shim under the heel was a red flag, which led me here. I'm very happy with GW delta, & can live with the extra stack if the AT delta comes out similar.

Yeah, no need at all to add an extra shim under the heel.

Sorry the shim is what comes with the AT 14 and the reason for the 24mm heel, I wasn't expecting that. Not using it would likely result in a flat to negative delta when adjusted for an alpine sole.
