Any creative ways to get 110 brakes on an X-Comp? Are Griffon brakes at all compatible? Could I swap brake arms possibly?

Interesting fact: Royal brakes are compatible with X-Comp. The brake bases are different, but Marker was smart enough to design the brake arm carriers such that the heel piece can be removed from the base and spring without tools. I now have 110mm brakes on my X-Comp16s soon to be mount on some Peak 104s.

Marker X-Comp 16 GW

I'm finding the return-to-center on the X-Comp is really slow, almost nonexistent. I click in the boots, push out the toe until it is about to eject, then I slowly push the toe back in. I expect the bindings to snap the boot back to center once the wings start to engage, but this never really happens. I almost have to push it all the way back to center. Here in the last picture I would expect the boot is in far enough for the binding to pull it the rest of the way, but it's stuck.

IMG_0075.jpeg IMG_0076.jpeg IMG_0077.jpeg

A few things to note:

1. Boots have alpine soles (non GW).
2. Forward pressure is set.
3. The sliding AFD usually doesn't slide.
4. The toe of the boot above the lug is slightly rubbing on the inner (non-wing) part of the binding (seen in middle pic).
5. This binding has a teflon front instead of rollers.
6. This binding also has a piston damper, which should slow down the return, but it's not apparent when I actuate the wings by hand.

Is this expected behavior? Would the response be significantly different on snow in the presents of weight, vibrations, water? The same boot in an Look SPX 14, Atomic X12, and Tyrolia FF ST 16 all produce a rapid return-to-center on the bench.

I have to think this is a big reason why Marker's upper-level sponsored alpine racers still use the old Twincam Comp toepieces. Return to center on those is lightning fast.

@Philpug when they changed/ updated the Squire 11 ID (21/22 22/23) I see that the toe is 19 and the heel is 24 for a 5mm difference.

I can't find any specs on the prior years 20/21 toe height and heel height. Trying to figure out what the toe and heel height difference was in the 20/21 version. Thanks

Edit -- found on Marker Catalog ISSUU https://issuu.com/kmsport_pl/docs/1920-marker-workbook-en-mr according to the catalog the old toe was 18 and the heel was 24 so previous version had a 6mm difference? A bit confusing as previous models had a 22 stack height vs. the newer models with 24.....

I htink the change was when they went to SoleID, so all the GW compatible toes will be the same.

Any difference between the xcomp GW vs the regular xcomp other than one excepts GW boots? Also can I use a traditional alpine boot in the xcomp GW?

A side note for folks thinking of or currently using these- I just had a real life experience as pictured by tomahawkins at end of a *very* firm morning hot lap on my third outing on volkl deacon master 76 with xcomp 16 . Felt off as pulled into lift and looking down noticed the wing of the left toe 1/4 out on left and realized I just missed a prerelease that would have very likely resulted in a rag doll trip through the pucker brush at speed. I could not twist or thump the boot back in; I had to fully release from the heel to get the toe to re-engage. Clean, snow free non gw boots and clean snow free bindings, properly set up to spec- I stopped right then to confirm and walked straight to the hill shop and re-confirmed- all set to spec. Love the ski and plate, and that was also 100% my last run on that set-up.

Is this a bad design? Every binding I have uses rollers to support the forward pressure of the toe lug. All except the Marker XComp; it uses an plastic AFD. Is this the source of the problem? Unlike the bottom AFD, I suspect this forward AFD is subjected to higher continuous loads. I mean what's going to happen if a little sand is sprinkled in there? Makes me think that TUV certification is not the end-all-be-all to binding safety. It's a bummer since Marker stuff is generally impressive -- the heel piece on the XComp 16 is particularly bomber. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but it's hard to discount the evidence.

The old Twincam doesn't have rollers (nor does its functional clone, the Atomic/Salomon Icon). It does have an AFD that moves with the toe lugs, and those lugs move with each other (i.e. they don't "wing out" like those on the X-Cell or the others in that lineup above) so the need for rollers is somewhat mitigated.

I'm not entirely sure why Marker stopped selling the Twincam bindings for racing and high-level recreational skiing. My guess is that they wanted a toepiece with a smaller footprint on the ski, but that's mostly mitigated by the plates used on race skis. Perhaps it was the fact that those Twincam setups lasted a long time and thus Marker wasn't selling as much new product? It's hard to say.

FWIW, I can confirm the 30% easier to get into even though I was not aware nor did it cross my mind making the purchase. I have '23 and older same Marker model. Last night my daughter and I were comparing our new and old skis when that stood out.

Beyond that I don't know why I got Markers again except for not recalling any I've had being problematic and they've worked as advertised.

I just realised that the Salomon Strive also uses a similar design to the XComp: 2 rollers on the wings and a forward AFD. I haven't seen or heard that the Strives have this issue, so something else must be going on.

I'm helping a lightweight skier choose a binding it will be for Nordica Santa Anna 110 - 161. I'm trying to discern the difference between the Marker 11TP (2023) and Marker Squire 11. Any thoughts on these?
