I thought the 1200 would have an R in the serial number.

When we were at the US Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame ceremonies in Aspen, @Weems introduced us to Chuck Ferris. Chuck was a former olympian and not that wasn’t important but for this post was the man behind Pre (Precision) Skis. In the 70’s, Chuck worked for K2 and was basically commissioned to start Pre skis. Pre was actually the brainchild of K2, who wanted to a second ski brand under their umbrella. Pre was the first ski company that didn’t make their own skis and were actually a marketing brand. I have more information at home on this and will add after the Mothers Day trip.

On a lighter note. Pre is the reason for my having to go back to Blue Mountain, the bane of my skiing existence. Early on Chuck had Pre based in Sun Valley and, at the time was my only reference. I made a bet that Pre was always based in Sun Valley, the cost of the bet was for me to have to ski at Blue. It turned out that Pre, in their later years moved their headquarters to Utah. I lost the bet and had to ski Blue.

Phil, it's Chuck Ferries, not Ferris. We ran a bio for him in the December 2009 issue of Skiing History (p 37: see https://www.skiinghistory.org/issue/digital/volume-21-no-4-december-2009). Chuck was the first American man to win a major European gate race, the Hahnenkamm slalom in 1962. After retiring from the US Ski Team, Chuck coached the women's team, then joined K2 to help design their first generation of race skis and serve as VP/marketing. When he wanted to move from Vashon to Sun Valley, the arrangement was made to launch Precision Skis under his management. Later, with some partners, he acquired Scott USA. The first generation of PRE skis were made in K2 molds but with wood cores instead of foam. Thus the 1200 was made in the K2 710 mold, and the SP version came out of the VO mold. I had a pair of 1200s marked "TV" which meant it was a perfectly matched pair pulled out for use by skiers in videos. One of the best skis I ever had. Someone smashed a window, broke into my car and stole my SPs.

And, BTW: Pugski members can sign up to read that Skiing History story with a FREE six-month subscription to the digital edition of the magazine. Go to http://skiinghistory.org/free-digital, and use the coupon code BOARDSM.

I am recalling the Pre 1600 race skis circa 1982-83 were made in Austria using molds from Atomic. At least that’s what I recall the rep telling us gullible shop types.

204 1200sp. Had the flex number on it at one time. Serial number is right under the boot area. Was this made in the K2 factory?

Yup, the 1200/1200SP came out of the K2 factory. My pair also had the flex number on them too. Interesting that Phil Mahre signed them.

Phil stopped by the shop to do some promotion we had going on. I thought they came out of the K2 factory, so that must have been close enough for him to sign.

PRE M 6.3, PRE 1200, PRE DHP 1800 with Salomon equipe demo bindings. The downhills are ready to ski but I always find some excuse not to take them out. Next winter for sure.

I've been promising to take my 215 DHP's out for what seems like forever and it never seems to happen! Does anyone have any interesting insights into this pair re serial numbers, tip protectors etc?

Those look like they came out of the Head factory.

My favorite PRE was the 1900GS. A black go-faster ski that fit me just right. ……or was it 1800GS? Anybody remember the 1900GS?
I recall a 1600GSP (I had the 1200SP) and there was a DH model too, that might have been the 1800DHP. I don't recall a 1900 anything There was the Electra 2000 but that had more to do with upgrading the the Electra base.

Thanks Phil for the info. Must have been that 1600GSP. It was a great ski.

Fun stuff and thank you. I don't know the why I didn't have PRE when they interested me. As a boomer I wanted the red white and blue K2s I was denied as a child. The graphics here are a reminder of past times and my kids' loving some retro stuff.

Little late to the party, but I had to dig these out of the basement and post them. We've mentioned the SP, the GSP, and the DHP, but what about the Super G?

Serial number half worn on this ski and completely missing on the other. Dunno if they mean much but I saw everybody else was posting them.
Bindings are also busted so I doubt they'll ever see snow again without a major rehaul. Good garage sale find though.

Never saw the SuperG. cool. Looking at the sidewall, my guess Head built them.

The 1200 were probably the best powder ski I owned !
Or maybe it is only my defective memory ...

I had them for two years and left the pair in the locker when I separated with my then girlfriend .
When I came back to reclaim them , they were gone !
Abject misery , as you can imagine .

Today I found a pair of 190 cm PRE M2-A...
Basic stuff , nothing to write home about . But it is to be seen .
If you know anything about that model , let me know . I will ski them tomorrow as my boots fit .
I am willing to ski anything , really !

PRE 1200 ... powder ... young - a long time ago - , I could ski powder with anything , even Fisher RC4 Comp or Kneissl White Star both 210 .
Now I swear by the Salomon BBR ... :) ... but there is no powder left on the slopes and little snow coming down anyway .
But if you see an affordable pair of PRE 1200 , let me know : I could be tempted !
