I think the Spademan thread should stand on it's own. we can merge any Spademan content to that thread that is not already there.
Can't have Spademan here, too confusing!

Good lord did Bill Briggs really use a Spademan on the Grand Teton?

I had no experience of Spademan. Were they decent? I cant see them as a performance binding. Would be the ultimate demo binding.

You can stand at the top of a bump run or other extreme challenge and crank down a Spademan SUPER tight so there is zero chance of a pre release... also zero chance of any release though hahahaha. Spademans set loose would release on a feather. Spademans set tight wouldn't budge.

In theory Spademans were a great idea but I think it was the metal to metal contact that was their downfall, the brass was jsut too soft and gripped when it should have held or slipped when it should have gripped. Now, if someone made a modern Spademan out of carbon fiber or some super strong composite.

It was a great rental binding for sure and would have been a good demo binding too.

All I know is that the fist skis I ever strapped on in 1972-3 had Spademan bindings.
My experience with those bindings were those of delightful discovery. And I am sure I am not the only one who was introduced to the joy of skiing on Spademan bindings.

I skied on a Spademan demo ski and had the classic straight ahead pre-release in a black diamond mogul field. I slid straight forward down the top sheet of the skis and when I hit the tips I was shot into the air like off a kicker on a jump. I went down hard on landing.

In the early eighties (might have been mid eighties) a friend built the first pair of release-able bindings for telemark skiing using a Spademan binding, What he did was mount the binding backwards on the telemark skis and then took the brass butterfly toe plate and mounted it backwards on the very front of the toe of the telemark boot. I thought that this was the highest, best use of a Spademan binding and tried to convince my friend to contact Dr, Spademan and help revive the company, but my friend wasn't interested so it never happened.

Plus you could go tap dacing at night, a win/win.
