Two days after the death/accident at Marble, three very experienced skiers triggered a huge avalanche in Maroon Bowl (just next to Aspen Highlands) that killed one of them. It is not clear where the three were from -- seems like they might have been Europeans -- but the implication is that while highly trained, equipped and experienced, they failed to understand the unique problems and danger that Colorado's Continental Snowpack poses. Here's a link to the report.

And there's a video of a CAIC staff member discussing the snowpack a short distance from the site of the avalanche:

Very sad.

What a shame... even well trained, and experienced backcountry skiers can have things go wrong.

And that video is interesting, in how deep the weak layer is, and how easy it was for him to move that block once the weak layer was cut/released.

My dad was a consulting electrical engineer with at least fifty years experience when a lawyer at a trial asked him "so, in your capacity as an expert witness, what you're saying is that electricity can kill you if you don't know what your doing, is that right?" His reply was "No, what I'm saying is that electricity can kill you even if you DO know what you're doing."

Condolences to their loved ones.
