Part of the drive for revenue is simply costs. Covid hit all school athletics pretty hard as most today have to be self sustaining. Often, it's the football and basketball revenues that fund a lot of the athletics these days.

Seems to be a self feeding monster but .. for Covid, the Big Ten noted (theathletic.com) in 20/21:

Illinois reported only a $3.2 million loss to the NCAA, while Purdue’s deficit was slight at $8.1 million. Nebraska, which currently has no debt, showed just a $12 million shortfall. Other Big Ten documents received by The Athletic show varying losses at Michigan State ($15.4 million), Minnesota ($18.3 million), Maryland ($20.9 million) and Rutgers ($31.4)
And with payouts under the Big's contract with Fox at 100M per school...there will be plenty of $. Those non-revenue producing sports better not be stuck flying coach on their coast to coast trips between MD, NJ and LA. The $ will get sucked up by the ever increasing coaching arms race...Lincoln Riley has a 100M contract so others will want to compete..not to mention the assistants. I predict very little will work its way down to the rowers, runners, swimmers, softball and baseball players.

The Pac 12 is way behind when it comes to its TV contract and payout to the schools. For FY2021 the Pac 12 payed $20 million per school. SEC: $50 million, Big 10: $45 million, Big 12: $35 million, ACC: $36 million. The SEC is expected to go up to $100 million per school in the near future as is the Big 10. Not sure how the Pac 12 can compete on the field when they are so far behind in revenue. More money equals better facilities and improved pay, especially for the assistant coaches.

Notre Dame is going to have to climb down off their perennially overrated high horse and join a conference if they want to continue to have any chance to compete for a national championship. The Big 10 is the best all around fit.

As a former employee at a Big Ten school (25 years at Northwestern), I'd be happy to see Notre Dame join the conference. And Notre Dame has competed since 2017 in the Big Ten in ice hockey. But according to a former ACC commissioner, there’s language in Notre Dame and the ACC’s TV contract that stipulates if ND were to join a football conference before 2036, it must be the ACC.

That being said, lawyers and athletic directors find ways to wiggle out of agreements...

And money. They can always buy their way out of it.

travel costs can be high but I suspect in the long term, the Big 10 will add a few more colleges and create new divisions from their East and West ... and with it additional playoffs
