@SSSdave , did you climb that tree? ;). That is just the kind of old tree that I would hate to see lost to wildfire or any other mishap. Awesome!

Doesn't sound very desolate to me. Cool spot though
I think the proximity to Lake Tahoe, plus being very close to the Sacramento area and not far from Bay Area make it less desolate. But I've been on hikes there where I've seen few others.

Although, I spend a lot more backpacking time in the Eastern Sierra and less here in the Tahoe area. But, my son's first backpacking trip was into Desolation a few years ago. The first image won the "kids" photo comp category for Tahoe Quarterly. The third image is the back cover for the newest Desolation guide book.
