no this is not a backup. when they print a new pass, my understanding is that action would deactivate your old pass, just like if you ask for a replacement credit card, the old one is canceled.Just got mine yesterday, 12/8. Cool thing is that I already had it printed at the mountain, so now I have a backup pass just in case.
Not that I would ever lose anything- or misplace things indefinitely.
If you were to bring the wrong pass to the line you'd get an error and they'd suspect you might be sharing/misusing a pass and have some explaining to do, plus holding up the line. So if you lose the activated pass, go straight to pass office not the lift. You can bring the copy and they may be able to reactivate that one, but just to save the plastic waste though.
