We are holding our breath and crossing our fingers that no one starts a major fire this year. Honestly, I wish they would just ban fireworks.

They are not doing fireworks in Lafayette this year and personal fireworks are illegal but people will ignore that. I hate the fire danger plus the pets and vets that suffer. In Oregon my sister was super close to evacuation last year with fires and with the heatwave that’s about to hit I know they are all on edge.

My dog Sadie hates fireworks, will bark and whimper. It doesn’t help that we live in a rural area, not far from the Tulalip Tribes Indian Reservation, which despite having some nicely developed retail near a freeway with big box stores in addition to two casinos, one with a large hotel resort, also has Boom City with a couple dozen booths selling fireworks. Everyone near us seems to invite their friends and family for July 4th, as well as New Years, and set off fireworks starting early and ending never.

Not a fan.

Also, it’s much warmer and dryer around here than usual in the PNW and fire danger is very real this year.

yeah, only certain fireworks are supposed to be legal but at least it allows the police to shut it down if they can find the people. Its really a nuisance and I really feel for those who lose pets (just ask your local pet rescue about the number of pets that run away terrified) and especially the Veterans with PTSD. What I find most annoying is the total lack of respect for others in their own neighborhoods with the noise and fire risk. after 9pm, its really rude and obnoxious. One of the reasons listed by the town for cancelling fireworks was the strain placed on police departments and fire/rescue from people setting off their own.

I realize you're talking about neighborhoods and local things, and I agree people can be rude about it. But that seems kind of early. All the local county, town, and the DC fireworks all start a bit after 9 PM. It's too light out otherwise.

After 9PM?? It doesn't even get dark until 9pm. Most fireworks are best displayed in the dark. People with pets can certainly take precautions near Independence Day. There are plenty of safe and respectful places and times to do fireworks displays. The Seaside Oregon beach where we celebrate is a long wide sandy beach well separated from any fuel source. We pass out clean-up bags and everyone cleans the beach. The beach is the cleanest on July 5th than any other day of the year.

Banning the traditional Independence Day celebration ??? That's your solution?

Omg. I’m not going down that rabbit hole. Tradition. Start a new one. How about a tradition of honoring our country by cleaning up trash, helping others or something constructive other than destructive?
yes, neigborhoods for 9. The town fireworks used to start at 9 and were over by 9:20. If they set the time for legal fireworks to 9, that would mean 10. That’s plenty of time to Get drunk and blow stuff up.

Looking forward to a weekend of partying and fireworks at Magic. We've the town fireworks on mountain July 2nd and Magic is doing their own on Sunday. Town parade is Saturday and it'll be nice to have a slice of normalcy as much of this was tapered last year or didn't happen at all. I plan to park at the mountain July 1st and not drive anywhere for the weekend. Black line tavern opens up July 1st which will nice to have our walk to bar open but we mostly just hang with our excellent neighbors as we can see and hear all the mountain goings on. We leave for Maine for 5 days on July 5th.

Your location is very much the exception in the US regarding fire danger but it still holds risk for area wildlife. Most people set fireworks off in areas that can pose a huge risk to people, animals, and property.

We will be in Park County, Colorado this year, so no Fireworks. Last year we went to Kremmling, Colorado and the city show is shot off of the Bluff north of town. Very cool time, we sat in the city park and got drinks across the street at the local distillery/brewer. They are having them again this year if you are in the area. They launched one 16 inch shell that was unbelievable.

16????? Try last years 62" worlds record shell. my house is just below the large open field seen when the shell detonates. This is Emerald Mountain, where Howelson Ski hill is (seen to the left) The town launches its July 4th and Winter Carnival fireworks about a 1/3 and 1/2 miles above our house. Its quite close, and pretty amazing except the size of many of the shells buckle windows and doors. we get big chunks of debris, some still smoldering when they land. With the Worlds Record shell, we had to have our doors open to help mitigate the concussion. We were concerned our windows would be blown out. The town said they would replace any damage. it was pretty much like a nuclear flash going off. glad we are done with that now.

yes it was. fortunately the town has now said the summer fireworks program has been discontinued. they are looking into drone and laser displays/shows which to me, are really cool and are the future.

Wow! I can only imagine what that felt like. The drone thing idea is cool and looking forward to see how that develops. There is something to a pyrotechnic show. I’m sure their days are numbered, but I do love them.

I don’t get how a town would accept the risk of even blown out windows. That’s expensive to replace double pane windows. Got to be 100 houses in the area, no?
And if the thing doesn’t reach altitude, it could be much worse.

Lol, tourism dollars rule.
not 100, actually maybe 25-35 houses in that immediate area.

the first attempt didn’t reach altitude and did detonate only a couple hundred feet up. It was not cool. this is just another reason why the whole fireworks thing is lost on me.

Heh, I remember a guy I worked with years ago telling me about an incident in NY state. He was in demolition in the Army. So they had to blow up this bridge on the base or near it. They either miscalculted the safe distance or the exposive quantity used, I forget. But they blew out the windows of a helicopter parked as I remember a mile away. It was also the one the general used and he was not happy.

since we're on the subject of blowing up stuff, let us not forget this all-time classic.

Happy July 4th. (come on, we know the reason why you love fireworks is because of stuff like this)
