How does one change the "comment associated with their name?

When I signed up, somehow, a thread I was watching, appeared next to my avatar. How do I change that?

You mean the "In the parking lot" thing? That's automatic. The more you post, it'll change.

If that is what you mean, then don't worry about it.

You can wait for it to change, or you can click on your handle, go to Account Details, and change it to whatever you like.
