I posted something about this a couple years ago and will do so again now as it may help working class skiing folks locate and reserve inexpensive lodging in South Lake Tahoe that is adjacent to Heavenly. Midweek at least, SLT an urban area with a 50k population, has an abundance of inexpensive lodging because on weekends the large Nevada casinos draw masses of gamblers. Of course there is a list of travel services that will provide lodging information for any urban area however that won't show a broader full listing but only lodging they contract with. There was a time when a person might find a local telephone directory at a pay phone booth and in the front yellow pages copy the pages for motels, hotels, lodging, however in this smartphone era, pay phones are rare and those that exist almost never have an actual phone book, much less pages that have not been torn out for motels.
On google dot com search with "google maps south lake tahoe lodging". That will put a top search hit on the google maps link with a split screen of different panes including one with a map of SLT. Most of the lodging, will be near the California side of the Stateline border along US50 because that is where most of the lodging was built decades ago both for Heavenly Valley ski resort as well as the many more weekend people visiting the adjacent Nevada major gambling casinos. Because there is a significant excess of available rooms at SLT Monday through Thursday, rates are at least half what is charged on weekends when gamblers and work week weekend skiers visit.
One will see $XXX numbers where lodging is on the map however until one select dates via the pane at top, those numbers may not reflect your dates nor what is actually available. After doing so the numbers will change. Before zooming in only the more expensive lodging may show prices thus zoom into street level that will bring up less expensive lodging. Even then, only lodging those travel services have listings for, that pay google may show up. Services will only show their listing that have vacancies. Most important, the per night $ numbers do not include, a list of other fees and tax that will only show after one has drilled down on pages for a listing. And note the big casinos are not competitive at the low end as they have a lot of fees. Also beware that there are some low end rooms in lowest motels, even the budget minded ought avoid unless one has already physically checked out such at their lodging in the past. Even then some rooms may be sub-par so a check on yelp has value too. As someone that often roughs it, summer backpacking and disperse camping in remote places, old, cheap motels never bother me as long as they are clean and don't have strange odors, especially chemical smells, or were used by smokers.

"google maps Thunderchief Inn South Lake Tahoe" suddenly that specific inn that had been absent on the map will also show so if some lodging you are looking for doesn't show, it is probably because google is apparently not being paid enough as all this is a marketing game with we visitors the prey. Now in the above example by then drilling down on the Thunderchief Inn in the "View prices" field, one will see 5 travel services listing the inn with a price of $49 a night midweek. Then select one of the travel services like bookings dot com that will then display a usual long list of other information like amenities and reviews. Upon starting the online reservation that is when the total costs will show that in this case adds $4 city tax plus $5.88 for local 12% lodging tax for $58.88 total.
Now if one prefers to have some choice as to which room is actually provided, one might google search with "Thunderchief Inn south lake tahoe website". At that website is a "contact" field that will bring up a custom email page. I asked for a clean downstairs room without chemical cleaning odors or use by smokers. Note there are several other motels in SLT at similar prices including Motel 6, however lodging businesses in SLT are currently having issues due to lack of maid services due to the pandemic.
