The truly stupid thing about conference realignment is that all the other college sports are stuck with whatever makes the football team the most profitable for the school. That's how you get today's news that the Atlantic Coast Conference is adding two schools on the Pacific Ocean.

It will never happen because it makes too much sense, but all the other sports should have stayed in their conferences from 25 years ago and have the football programs make their own conference.
I fully agree. I’m a Tennessee graduate from a multigenerational UT family. We in the south do not understand the bi-coastal conferences. Traveling to opponent’s towns and stadiums was always a big part of the SEC football experience.
I have no idea how sports that play more than once a week can survive the coast to coast travel.
I think it’s the precursor to the end to big time college athletics.
Other countries universities do well without an NCAA. We will too.

Eventually, it will be all one big conference.

With regional divisions, like maybe 10 or 12 in the Pacific, another 10 or 12 Midwest, similar Atlantic Coast, Southeast, etc. Texas schools will be off by themselves, they way they want it anyway.

I’m old. I’ve followed NCAA football across the country for over 50 years. Some of my fondest memories are related to football. Home and home with Notre Dame. Orange Bowls, Sugar Bowls, Legion Field, between the hedges and The Swamp. I think those days are probably over. Maybe we’ll evolve into a new version of college football but I think it will be a pale version of what I’ve enjoyed for my lifetime.

There's nothing that mandates that. Virginia Tech used to be in different conferences for football and basketball, and other sports. The Big East football conference used to look very different than the Big East basketball conference.

I wonder if one result of this whole realignment might be to divorce football from all the other sports with regard to conferences. It would make a lot more sense for, say, the former Pac-10 volleyball teams to stay with the former Pac-10 schools, than for some of them to try to play on the east coast.
Good CNN piece suggesting same HERE.

Another interesting twist this season is the whole Deion Sanders thing, bringing his whole team from his old school Jackson State to CU. That's a lot like moving a pro sports team from one city to another. Part of that was also the dumping of many players on the CU team prior to his arrival.

What's hilarious (and ironic) is that the PAC went undefeated this weekend in their non-conference openers.

It's all about the students and the alumni connection to the STUDENT athletes. My kid talks about every player he's had in classes, some of them legit engineering math courses.

Here's a photo of him with his friends at the game yesterday.. THIS is what it's all about..

If they stop being actual student athletes, college athletics, even football, will fade away in to oblivion just like the USFL,XFL, etc..

Interesting that Washington State and Oregon State have filed a complaint so they can take control of the future of the conference. They were worried the other 10 teams would vote to dissolve the conference and split all of the assets. According to the bylaws, they argue, they are the only two remaining voting board members.

Wazzu and OSU got their injunction to prevent a board meeting this week. One of the things thought to be on the agenda was the other ten schools wanted the PAC to help pay expenses for changing conferences. Next is a hearing which includes discovery which includes emails. I don’t think at least some of those schools will want their communication made public. I predict an out of court settlement with non disclosure agreements.

One of the things reported in this, the schools who are leaving created bylaws saying that schools leaving can't vote to change the bylaws (as in 'give us the money'). Now these same teams want to vote to change the bylaws.
Apparently the PAC-12 has 150 employees.
Life is a wonderment.

I guess it is not enough that terrible leadership and decision making lead to this point so now the departing schools want to implement a scorched earth policy. Cannot wait for emails to become public!

Short version..

Player asks to transfer a 2nd time as an exception to a rule. Sort of a family crisis situation he wanted to be closer to home for.
First school, 2nd school, and of course UNC 3rd school all approve and agree it should be allowed. NCAA reviews and says proper paperwork will allow it..
Proper paperwork submitted well before fall of 2023. NCAA denies it. UNC appeals, NCAA denies again.

Lots of outrage from UNC and BOTH other schools impacted who approved it.. NCAA does nothing..

Sept 26th, State of NC Attorney General starts to file an Antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA

Yesterday, NCAA suddenly reverses their decision. Tries to claim (incorrectly) that UNC did not file the proper paperwork. UNC claps back with the receipts.. The "new information" was the fact the NCAA was about to get sued and lose big.

Well...this Washington Husky still likes watching them beat the hated Ducks. Nail-biter all the way and these teams will likely meet again. Mike Penix is the truth...watch him if you haven't yet. He throws the ball into NFL windows.

Riley's offense gave up almost as many points to Notre Dame as Grinch's Garbage Truck Dumpster Fire Defense did. Lincon throws Grinch under the Trojan bus in 3....2.....1......

NCAA all over Michigan for a SpyGate scandal. If they're confirmed to have been traveling to future opponents to steal their signs, the wins from those games get negated right? Michigan might be done..

Amazing if true as it's so sad. Same feeling I get for the college kids who got booted for sports gambling - I ponder the ignorance of not looking long term. Somewhere in all this massive amounts of money one would think the boundaries would be clearly defined and well known up front as to the consequences.

of course, if Michigan's SpyGate turns out true, someone weighed the risk and thought it worth while.

Debacle known as college football is correct. Shame on the Big10 for suspending Jim Harbaugh. Horrible, but this could get wrose......Disclaimer...NOT a Michigan alum or fan.

Worse, is the debacle of the NCAA for not allowing the teams to use the same communications technology as the NFL. Why college football is using signs is and not state of the art communication technology to call plays is a debacle. NCAA FCS football what it is. A semi-pro league. Use the same technology as the NFL and remove even the slightest signs of cheating. NCAA = total debacle.

I really don't feel horrible for Harbaugh given rules are known, but agree that NCAA is a behind current trends and technologies.

I do like Michigan and find it a bit a shame if overall it didn't slant a win to them.
