the early settlers where a pretty unimaginative lot.
in Canada unless it's a rough translation from an original language (Canada) or possibly someones family name we have far too many duplicates.
most of our original language place names weren't any better, but the Euro translation of them is often unique.

Truth or Consequences (T & C) is a real place in NM.

I don't think there's any skiing there, though.

I've been to the hot springs there back when I lived in NM. Definitely not any skiing right in T or C, but not that far really from some great hills!

Dildo Newfoundland (just outside of Conception Bay) has skiing 100k away

Yup my son and I LOVE to go to Marble Mountain NFLD. It's actually a pretty great place. My avatar photo is actually of my son when he was 7 y/o launching it while skiing Marble. :)

There’s at least 26 towns called ‘Berlin’ in the US. I’ve been to four of them.

Except that only some of the list pronounce it Ber-LYNN, and the rest is pronounced BERR-lin

And all of you have figured out I'm actually from a small town in Cumbria County, England, right?

OK. This thread is evolving to... funny place names near meogsmile

Accident, MD - small town in western MD not too far from Wisp Ski Area.*

Bumpass and Assawoman in rural Virginia

Blue Knob Ski Area in southern PA*
Blue Ball, PA - a couple hours east of Blue Knob.
Intercourse, PA - smack dab in the middle of Amish Country
Jim Thorpe, PA - I don't know if Jim Thorpe ever went skiing, but I'm sure he would have been good at since he was world class in every other sport he tried.

*bonus points for place names connected to skiing.

Near the village my better half is from in Germany. Literal translation is "moldy butter."

And near the famous Garmisch-Partenkirchen ski area, they've been trying to build the Wanktunnel for years. This sign says "Wanktunnel now for our children!"

Around here in my neck of the woods where I live there is absolutely nothing of interest to report so folks wouldn't wanna know anyway.

Our package was mailed to Fullerton TX instead of Fullerton CA.

Musquodoboit Harbour Nova Scotia. Actually part of the regional muni of Halifax. From wikipedia The community is an anglicized version of the Mi’kmaq word Moosekudoboogwek or Muskoodeboogwek.
Locally a lot of people refer to it as Mosquito bit harbour.

I checked this place out and can confirm that after some trial and error it is not what it purports to be... :roflmao:

The pronunciation of this place confused me when visiting Washington... I wouldn't have guessed the correct one:

I grew up in Hamilton, about an hour from Crystal Beach and visited there many times as a kid and teenager...Yeah, um, NO. Based on house parties that spilled out onto the street and other large scale partying and walking around drunk, along with a beach front amusement park with a wicked Haunted House. I'd say Sodom Rd. might not be too far off the mark. ogsmile
