This week I am at Mammoth and I didn’t bring my parka because I was expecting bluebird Spring skiing.
Instead, we’ve had temperatures in the 20s and 30s. Yesterday we had winds so bad they eventually shut down most of the mountain. Today we had swirling snow and winds.
All I brought with me is my Nano Puff jacket and my R1 Techface jacket (not the hoody). I am already a huge fan of both of those jackets (and Patagonia in general) but I’ve never used them for skiing. I was worried about them providing enough protection in this weird weather. I wore the Nano Puff on the inside and the R1 on the outside and couldn’t be happier. I was warm and dry the whole time — even when the wind was blowing the chair sideways and through 6 hours of skiing in snow today.
I have to be careful with parkas because I run hot in general and don’t like to overheat. My buddies tease me that you can always spot Doug because my parka is unzipped and flapping in the wind as I come down the hill. This combo was light, comfortable, and breathable. And both of these jackets have a million applications off the shelf.
So let’s hear some praise for Patagonia for those of you that like it!
