Nice. Exactly what my wife said.

Correct, but not satisfying. There's another answer: once you hear it, you'll kick yourself for not thinking of it. I had to google it.
our alienation from our true selves
I had been thinking along more Sybilized lines, but this is great. Unfortunately now the workplace anomie meter is front and center in my consciousness.

"The plural of self is selves."
Correct, but not satisfying.
I don't think it is really even correct. If you buy that, you could use the template "X is a word." for every sentence.

This goes into the difference between using a word and referring to it, as originally clarified by Gottleb Frege. Sinn und Bedeutung

(that's not really what the Frege distinction is about. But still...)

It’s easy enough to use the word when it’s within a compound word, as in “Get yourselves up the mountain and ski.” This is of course when I am addressing two or more people.

Bumping this to see if we should retitle this thread to "electric bolts in the sky are lightning, not lightening"? (Though they do "lighten" the sky...) :P

In a thread like this you might want to proof read your posts carefully.
LOL, I emailed the local news station once about a recurring typo in their Friday night football segment. They fixed it, but when I emailed them a thank you I had a typo in that!

Magenta is NOT spelled "purple".
Ciclamino is NOT spelled "purple".

Fuschia, violet, lilac and mauve are all more acceptable when spelled "purple" than magenta.

Also, cyan is not spelled "turquoise".
