but the english ... speaking? written? media typically calls it Val Gardena

Around here it depends. In German speeking part of Europe it's Groden of course, in Italy it's Gardena, elsewhere, it's sometimes Groden sometimes Gardena, even by same people/media, but Gherdeina, which is third official name of that valley, is never used by anyone except locals speaking Ladin.

I know there is time between when that was shot and the race, but man, that is an ugly looking surface. I am not sure that speed on a nearly bare glacier is a great idea after watching that.
