Regardless of set, conditions, and any other differences, I'm really not convinced there was much less stivoting in the women's race. Shiffrin was certainly quite stivot-heavy on the steep, and Gut-Behrami even moreso.

I wasn’t really talking about stivoting, more about skiing on the edge of disaster!
I have not seen one of the women but I bet there would be a lot less hucking, throwing & hurling going on (except maybe Robinson & Goggia). ogwink

Stivoting is a tactical choice used to adjust line or control speed.

As was pointed out above comparing times between men & women even on the same hill with similar conditions is pretty pointless.

That's my fault... I thought a lot of "...hucking, throwing, and hurling..." showed up in the amount and extremeness of stivoting, and I took it down that path. The video that sparked this seemed to feature a bunch of stivots at the beginning too.

I would suspect that Mikaela’s ex, who’s top 10 in GS, would beat her by multiple seconds. How many I don’t know since I’ve never seen the men race gs at that level.
There is a significant difference in approach/execution at lower levels.

Has anyone been to Birds of Prey?

Work permitting, I am flying family out to see the three races (SG-DH-SG) on 12/3-12/5.

We won't be skiing unless there is a major storm. It will be about the races and enjoying the towns of BC and Vail. Staying at the base of BC.

Wanted to make sure I understood the logistics as the grandstands are not at the base of the mountain. I am assuming there is a chairlift that takes spectators up to the finish area and grandstands. Also assuming I don't need to be on skis to get up the chair. Probably should have researched this prior but I am pretty sure I have seen many in that area for the prior races (BoP and 2015 WC's) who were clearly not on skis or skiing that day.

I called the Vail Valley Foundation and left message to call back and clarify. However, if anyone has first-hand experience with the BoP race would love to hear your thoughts on how to best navigate it on foot. Other highlights of course welcome also.

Thank you.

Basic information from the site; others can provide first hand knowledge:

https://bcworldcup.com/plan-your-visit/race-day-info/

Spectator parking is available in the resort parking lots at the base of Beaver Creek. Beginning on race days, regularly scheduled free shuttles will bring spectators to the Vilar Performing Arts Center and Birds of Prey Way expo area. Free race shuttles depart from the Covered Bridge, every 5-10 minutes throughout training and race days. Skis and snowboards are not permitted on the race shuttles.

For more information on parking, please call 970-949-4911

From the race shuttle drop off location, there is a five-minute on-snow walk to Red Tail Stadium. Please allow one hour of travel time from the base of Beaver Creek Resort to Red Tail Stadium to avoid missing any of the action!

ADA access to the venue is available on request. Please contact Birds of Prey Registration at 970-748-5901

I am not sure if @Bob Peters is still on this site but I know that he worked course crew at BC at least once.
Maybe try PMing him.

I was in contact with Peacock the other day and they assured me that they would be carrying the next few races even though they were not on the schedule yet. Lech/Zurs Parallel, Levi.

Thanks. Got a note from VVF and they stated there will be bus shuttles from base to the BoP finish area (with a small walk). No tickets needed. But bring a mask :)
Good to hear on Lech/Zurs. The non-Austrian races (Levi for example) are usually good to go.
The interesting part on the schedule is how the travel really divides up the speed and tech racers. Men tech skiers don't need to come to North America now after Levi. They won't be at BoP since there is no GS.
Used to see them in ORD as they flew and connected from Levi to LL or Vail. Only the speed skiers are coming and the Norway folks should already be training on B-Lift at Copper Mtn.

I worked at BOP for 9 days during the 2015 Worlds. Shuttles will take you to the finish area. I doubt they will allow you to ride the lifts without skis. Public parking will require a shuttle ride to the base of the mountain before loading the race shuttle. Plan plenty of time to ride both shuttles to get to the finish area. Enjoy!

In today’s news, Austrian Roland Leitinger tore his ACL parallel training, on the Reiteralm Glacier. Out for the season. He was 2nd at Soelden. Big loss. GS specialist, and a good one.

Parallel sucks. Just one person’s opinion. I wonder what Eliasch thinks of it?

I agree parallel sucks, but ... idk that anything i've seen indicates the injury is related to parallel

Based on the other proposals for increasing interest in alpine racing, i'd guess Eliasch is a fan

I don’t believe that his injury has a thing to do with specific parallel training….though that’s what he was doing. And….at least two of us agree that it sucks.

Eliasch has working groups looking at EVERYTHING. If Parallel is a good proposition for fans, TV, streaming, and growing the sport, I think we’ll see more of it. Even if he were to think it sucks!! HaHa.

I think everything is subject to quick change.

Hate to see any athlete lose the season this early.

I'm also not a fan of it. Sure, it works for the pro ski tour but in FIS racing it's nothing but kowtowing to media and sponsor money pressures.

In the article it was interesting that Ortlieb said the problems with the unequal course conditions at the parallel event in the Cortina WC were caused by the surface preparation not being the same across the whole hill.
