It would be great if they could hold the makeup at Beaver Creek, which is fun to watch, but maybe not enough advance notice to make it work.

Kilde, Hemetsberger, Odermatt; RCS in 9th and Ganong in 13th. Erik Arvidsson ended up 38th--after starting 63rd! The other US DH racers did not fare as well.

I forgot they changed the way the speed start list works ... way better now than the odd/even split IMO.

If they did this last year and I forgot, my bad.

This is definitely new starting this year.

Paris had great speed (top 140+), but before he took his ski off @100+ km/h … there was something funky about his turns. His outside ski looked jittery and not as solidly planted as usual… Anyone reading Italian press?

Last season was top 15 could pick the odd numbered spots according to ranking or something  ?

How are they doing it now?

Just got through the replay of the first DH... Kilde looked really good I think. Odermatt is impressive for a non-speed specialist as always. Hemetsberger almost pulled off the upset. The US was very 'meh' I think.

It looked like Paris had a pre-release trying to initiate a turn. And Crawford crossed his tips and went down, but got back up and finished.

Top 10 are drawn for start positions 6-15, next 10 are drawn for 1-5 and 16-20. With the new system, I think the main thing is that people ranked in the lower part of the top 10 have a better chance to get a favorable start position sometimes.

Odermatt wins, then Kilde and Mayer. Kyle Negomir started 51st and moved up to 23rd; the rest of the US team was pretty lackluster....

Of these older American downhillers struggling to stay in the top 30, how many are paying their own way versus funded by the team? Seems like a huge waste of resources when some new talent could be developed rather than providing races for very advanced recreational skiers.

We’ve been saying this for a several years now. It’s something of a mystery why Nyman is stiil out there. He’s not Johan Clarey, who’s also 1981, and finished 6th. Nyman was 58 out of 61 finishers.

“Very advanced recreational skiers “???. I’m guessing you’ve never been to a WC DH or SG… or for that matter ever had the opportunity to free ski along with a USST speed skier ( or tech for that matter).
I’ll agree it’s reasonable to question the wisdom of use of USST resources to continue to fund aging racers with dwinding likelihood of first page results . But Steve Nyman on a very bad day is still leagues better the a very advanced rec skier. Also, it ignores the real value the more senior members bring to / contribute in terms of institutional knowledge and experience to help mentor the younger and less experienced team members.

I was being sarcastic. I understand Nyman, Gagong, Goldberg, etc are incredible skiers. But as WC downhillers they peaked years ago. No doubt they are valuable as coaches and mentors to up and comers but then shouldn’t they be hired as coaches?

I know some skiers use their family money or raise funds independently but this has never been explained publicly. As a donor why would I donate to the ski team if X amount of money is being spent for a bunch of second 15 racers who rarely break out of this rut?
