Did a solo shuttle on this perfect October day: parked at Chimney Beach-> east shore bike path-> flume trail shuttles-> TRT-> Flume-> Marlette Lake-> Chimney Beach DH

Last time I did that ride was before the paved path & we had to ride the highway early in the morning with lots of commuters & delivery trucks. Add in Marlette Peak & that ride is an ATF classic that everyone needs to do at least once!

After a bunch of rain Friday & Saturday & a high respect for wet clay l ventured over the hill to ride the North Bonneville Shorline (BST) trail this afternoon. Pleasant cool temperatures, zero dust & quiet. This has become the go to when my regular trails are muddy…

That would be a bummer. The east shore path makes it pretty manageable, at least early in the morning. It’s 2 miles of fast downhill to get to the bike path.

I’m surprised how few people seem to know that linkup.

Probably need to keep it that way, not much parking at chimney beach. Definitely prefer it over Tunnel Creek.

This weekend marked a milestone. The maiden voyage of my home-built truck shell. I packed it up and took off on Friday about noon. First stop: Buena Vista River Recreation area. They have a nice assortment of trails that combine single track and old railroad grades (turned into roads) just on the edge of town.

IMG_20211008_135639_DRO.jpg
Parking was across the river. The bridge gave access to most (if not all?) of the trail system.

I found myself on a trail named South Bad Boyfriend. I was told it was technical. They did not exaggerate. I rode a lot of tough rock climbs but also hiked up and down a few that were just too exposed for me.

IMG_20211008_134042_DRO.jpg

Changing back to street clothes was a snap in the back of the truck. My skin tone is not that red. A trick of the light, I guess.

For anyone that hasn't seen the truck shell I built, here it is along Cottonwood Pass on my way to Hartman Rocks by way of C.B.

IMG_20211008_161300384.jpg

Looking west from the summit of Cottonwood.

IMG_20211008_170612_DRO.jpg

On a county road off the west side of the pass. Night one was cold and rainy. I was dry inside but don't have any heat yet. I stayed warm in a 0º down sleeping bag.

IMG_20211009_093730_DRO.jpg

While I was getting rained on the summits were getting snow.

I visited my racing buddy and his family in C.B. in the morning. Then I was off to Hartman. I kept wanting to stop to take photos of the cottonwood trees but resisted. You can thank me later. There was a bit of traffic and I wasn't really in gaper mode yet.

IMG_20211009_133812_DRO.jpg IMG_20211009_133730_DRO.jpg
I had arrived. These maps were priceless as the BLM.gov site was down and I couldn't do any research once I had decided when and where I was going.

IMG_20211009_151612_DRO.jpg

My wee truck parked in a disbursed camping spot. Over the rocks just behind the truck were 150 - 200 foot cliffs down to the main entrance and day user parking area and a challenging trail.

The trail system is quite robust with a variety of trail types and levels. Motorcycles, bikes and hikers share the same trails. The conditions are remarkably not at all chewed up like our moto trails. On a windy Saturday afternoon during a 3 hour ride, I saw two bikers, no motos, no hikers.

IMG_20211009_153343_DRO.jpg

This is an example of the large rock formations the trails traversed. I surprised myself by descending this. There was no loose grit and the steps weren't huge but it was a long sustained drop. I have been trying to reduce risk so I rationalized how low the objective risks were. Right.

IMG_20211009_154810_DRO.jpg

The rocky sections were connected by gritty sand that was very cohesive, not loose and deep but a firm, predictable tread. The rocky section I'm approaching would probably a combination of sand and small rocks interspersed with rock slabs. I had a lot more pedal strikes that usual as the pace of pedaling and the irregular spacing of rocks and obstacles was challenging.

IMG_20211009_154814_DRO.jpg

Looking over to Gunnison.

IMG_20211009_160239_DRO.jpg

There were brilliant cottonwoods scattered about the lower sections. The following day I rode through those trees.

My truck is a speck in the middle of the right third of this photo from the Rattlesnake trail.

Day is done.

IMG_20211009_184649_DRO.jpg

IMG_20211010_111037_DRO.jpg

A new day and new trails. The cottonwoods reminded me of roman candles.

img_20211010_112849_dro-jpg.144606

Ring Dike finished out my day. It paralleled the string of rocks where I was camped, but on the opposite side. Another feat of ignored self-preservation and a fun successful drop. Mind these are rubber always on the ground. I don't take air. They are steep and loss of control through hitting unexpected loose grit, wheel stopping rocks and just plain loosing balance are not realistic options.

I had lunch and packed up. I drove out the Powerline road. It ended in a section marked '4x4'. They weren't kidding. No damage done, but it was a real test of my skills (@nay is laughing) and my truck.

IMG_20211010_134901_DRO.jpg

At the bottom of the 4x4 road was a touch of humor.

IMG_20211010_141100.jpg

Seen on the way between Hartman and Gunnison.

IMG_2300.JPG

I usually go to Cottonwood Pass by way of Jack's Cabin Road. This time I took the more direct route that turned off further south along the road to C.B. I was in full on gaper mode by now.

IMG_20211010_144548.jpg

More roman candles.

This time there was snow on Cottonwood Pass.

Looking west from the pass, from whence I came.

Looking east towards B.V. from the pass.

And because Doug hadn't taken enough photos, this happened on the approach to Summit County on Hoosier Pass.

An HDR image generated by my phone. I think it looks painterly which is a nice effect.

The root image that made up the HDR version. It is truer to the light and colors.

Thank you for your time and patience. I sometimes feel like I should keep it brief, but somehow it always turns into a photo essay.

^^^^That’s awesome! And sorry for being lame and missing your DM asking for recommendations…although you figured it all out. Hartman’s is great in term of being user friendly - all the trails are so well marked, it has the difficulty rating sections, and pretty easy to link up loops. What did you think of Rattlesnake? That trail is a fave.

Looks like you got in two good tours of the “front side”. Ring Dike is fun, isn’t it? I never really ride that because it kinda doesn’t go anywhere, but it’s a cool granite-desert-sketch-it-rolls kinda thing.

I actually ended up in Hartman in afternoon yesterday. We decided to day trip as we needed to get my son his passport and check on the place we are buying in Gunnison. My son is off to the Azores as he qualified as one of the top 3 North American mountain runners in the Golden Trail series after a 7th place finish at the Pikes Peak marathon (run up the mountain and down) and then last weekend at Golden Arrow in Tahoe where he was 9th in a stacked field. I’m a 0.0 guy so this blows me away.

I’m also surprised that the increasing moto use isn’t really damaging the trails - they are mostly hard clay underneath and hold up well to all of the mountain biking as well. With some moisture they were in awesome conditions this weekend. I only had about 90 minutes to ride so I rode in from the parking lot and did about 8.5 miles. Always awesome to be back!

First pic shows the lack of moto damage as they throttle through, second is looking north to CB. Lots of snow up high back there although you can’t see the deeper ranges in this pic.

Looks like a great trip! I really enjoy seeing everyone’s photos. Motivates me to do the same.

still around 50° today but the approaching storm is supposed to drop temperatures and even bring snow to lower or mid elevations. I took a chance on the mud and went to North Fork park today. Pleasantly surprised to find hero dirt/brown powder everywhere. Kinda wish this storm would go somewhere else because the riding doesn’t get much better…

Grasshopper, it is always better to put the bike up for the winter while still feeling hungry, rather than stale!

Or, time to shop for a fat bike.....

I’m happy to move on to skiing but it’s only October 11th! Storm is just getting here.
I'm with you! November 11th and I'd be jumping for joy. But this will kill the final month of MTB especially since the snow will take a lot longer to dry out (I think it'll melt, which is good for the snowpack.)

Moosebrook in Gorham NH. They have some nice woodsy single track.

After the harder trails I liked the name of this easy on which was fast and fun.

This is why we love the Front Range - unless we get a big winter it’s usually dried out somewhere or it’s at least not wet clay. If we are truly snowed out here, the skiing is probably off the hook. But still, I can’t stand the idea of just being off the bike anymore because skiing doesn’t bring the fitness benefit and it’s so much easier to just hop a ride to get a fix when I can’t get to skiing.

I even ride my wife’s Peloton when the weather is bad, that thing is kinda awesome in its own right.

Back country skiing.
Yup. But you have to tee that up, I can get in a killer rides 20 mins from my house any day of the week. Can’t get the repetition backcountry, although with our new place in Gunnison, I expect to tour a lot this winter.

It’s the “entire day” vs. “any day” issue.

No photos from me today, as I just didn't feel like stoping :D I had few busy days at work, with stuff all over the day, so my cool bike with brand new frame, which I disassembled and assemble properly during last week, was just waiting in basement, so today I just took 1.5h off during work day turned phone off and went for short ride in woods behind our house. It was +8c only, which is way below my limit for going cycling, but it felt great. And after almost 4 months on that old hardtail it felt so damn good to finally be on proper bike again, so it wasn't cold or anything. Just awesome 25km of single trails behind our house... and as it felt so great I didn't want to spoil it with stopping :D

@Tricia, @Philpug, and I turned the pedals today up on Peavine. Beautiful weather, high 50s I think. Clear as a bell.

Tricia leading the pack. Phil and I could barely keep up!

What we lack in landscape color Tricia more than makes up for.
