As someone that has occasionally hunted Sierra Juniper image subjects over decades, it is convenient for all average persons that one of the best juniper tree forms I have ever found is right at the Carson Pass parking lot on SR88 at 8.8k that any person could take a superb picture of given proper time of day and weather. During winter this lot is in the California Sno-Park system with a fee. From my tiny Canon ELPH190 sized to 2400 pixels. With fresh snow I'd pull out my A6000.

Yes I jabbed the snow right at each of those spots. :) Of course, the bottom of each of my ski poles has a red paint dispenser. :)

Years ago found that was an effective way in post image processing to bring out perception of form with cloudy condition flat light ski track images. The tree image also taken with my compact digital camera has just enough effective resolution hand held that it views as sharp as possible on 1080p display viewed Internet.

I can’t believe I’ve overlooked this thread for so long - looking at all of these beautiful photos is as close as I’m getting to travel any time soon, so they are much appreciated!

not all from today, but all from this season in Banff. The skier in the last photo is my 11 year old daughter.

Not the typical Photo of the Day but for me it was important.

View from right of tower 10. Often non-stop from tower 13 at road cut down to behind the pine with the red text that I would call a 10.3 At 9200 feet was very nice lusciously edgeable skier tracked packed powder that makes skiing such bumps about the most viscerally exhilarating thing I can imagine spending my time doing along with bouncing softly in cold dry fresh.

My near-daily encounter with snow these days is done on snowshoes. I'm hiking the singletrack technical trails that I run in the green season. It's been looking like this lately.

Sometimes there are tracks ahead to follow.

Yes, this is the trail. We've had storms with a lot of wind lately.
Fallen trees have not been cleared yet. It hasn't been cold enough to freeze that brook.

When breaking trail, I am discovering I can sometimes follow deer tracks. They frequently use the human-made trails. So convenient when I'm the first one out and am not that familiar with the trail. Thank you, deer.

There is a lot of water still running out there.

It's not skiing, but it's definitely about snow. I'm still on it, feeling its density, its softness, listening to the silence broken by my footsteps. It feels very different from skiing. I'm bonding with the trees, the boulders, the animals that live in this world. I feel much closer to nature this way, traveling very slowly, one step at a time.
