I've seen the lights here in Washington, but we don't see them often. The big problem on the west side of the Cascades is that clear skies are unusual except in summer, and in summer it doesn't get dark until quite late, so if you're not a night owl you'll miss them.

How far north would you have to go to se Northern Lights on the American continent? Only Canada and Alaska or can you see them in any of the other states too?
I have seen them many, many times from ships on Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron, most commonly in autumn and winter. Those sightings would have occurred in the territorial waters of Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ontario, CA. Have also seen them (when not aboard a ship) from Minnesota, the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan, and many different places in CA. Also twice from the Salt Lake City, UT area, which is not at all common but occurs on rare occasions and was alerted to the possibility by media ahead of time.

On a related note, I have also seen and heard the Norwegian Hurtigruten ship Nordlys blowing the vessel's horn in Trollfyorden in the Lofotens. This was done for the benefit of all the passengers aboard but we were camped along the water's edge and I would rate the echo all-world best!

That's one weird cloud.
It's a mountain wave cloud created to the east of the mountains by the uplift. They often sit there all day like that, making it cloudy on the front range while it's sunny in the mountains a bit to the west.

It's a bummer we have another mountain wave cloud sitting on top of the front range again today. They are difficult to forecast, so temps will be ten degrees lower than predicted because the sun can't get through.

More metrological background:

A few more from Mt. Rose. Had to walk a bit since the traverse doesn't have enough snow to ski the whole way, at least not while I'm on @Philpug's skis. The view is worth the very short "hike".
