Still not more then 5cm snow outside of track, so still tied to same 2.5km loop made from last years snow and xc skis. But it started to snow yesterday afternoon, just in time for my evening 20km ski :) There's some more snow in forecast for next few days, so we will see... maybe I can get longer loop and maybe even chance for some alpine skiing and ski touring :)

We got a visitor from Zurich, just tons of fun to play in our winter wonderland yesterday. She did a speedy lap at 0730 with the neighbors, then here she is taking the tortoise lap with us at 1000. Didn’t capture video of turns at higher elevation with steeper terrain.

Past few days of my exploratory touring hasn’t yielded the descents I was hoping for. Lots of windblown trees, but the view down into the valley was peaceful. Another foot of snow would help cover the brush and rocks, nothing in the near forecast. Maybe time to head for the lifts.

First time on alpine gear today. We had planned to skin up Mont du Lac, due to power outgem they have been closed the whole snow storm of the last two days, so seemed like fun, before their lifts opened at 4:00.
But, they don’t want anyone skiing there ever. Bummer.
So we headed over to Spirit. They don’t want you skiing up dying lift hours, and they were open, but luckily, you can skin up through the woods on either side of the runs. Longer, but much more scenic.

Little backyard tour. Last Thursday Friday we got about 50cm of very wet snow. This has created a great firm base crust, which then was covered by a bit of fresh dry powder the following days.
So, although the terrain here in Duluth is far from optimal, the snow was great, and so are the views out across the big lake.
Also, it’s great just to boot up, step out the door and click into skis.

A few photos from the PacNW, before the inversion, heavy snow, freezing rain, and upside down
snowpack.

Did you get any of that freezing rain today? It was 10-12 degrees just east of chinook pass today but somehow it was pouring this frozen rain/sugary snow substance. Thats going to impact the pack and any new snow for abit.

Wow, we did receive freezing rain. In the Cascades, we had a strong inversion. At 3200’, temps 3-8*F and at ridge tops 5400’ temps 28-39* F. Freezing rain, tree fall, and natural avalanches closed I90 at Snoqualmie Pass, Hwy 2 at Stevens Pass and Hwy 12 at White Pass. Avalanche danger is “high” at at all zones in the Cascades due to the freezing rain and upside down snowpack.

A quick skin out the front door with my wife, on Christmas Day, when I had dinner in the oven/sous-vide cooker.

It was pretty dark by the time we we ripped skins to head back into our backyard, but we managed to avoid hitting anything.

From the top of Hawkridge, we had a good view of the lights of the harbor, and of 5 ships that were anchored in the bay. They came to shelter there due to high winds Friday and Saturday, which created waves up to 30’/9m out on the more exposed parts of Lake Superior.

Happy Hollidays to everyone!

Dealing with some shitty shin splints for last 10days, so last few days were looking more like training for Visma Classic races... skating skis, classic boots and poles and double poling all those WC tracks in Planica... after 3 days and almost 100km, I'm happy I need to go to work today, as another day would probably make those shin splints smallest problem of all :roflmao:
