A great weekend up on the North Heore of Lake Superior.
Skied Lutsen on Saturday. Loving my Blizzard Firebird Sport Ti, and like @Tricia , I even took them in some easy moguls, and they did well (for me)!

Sunday we took the whole group : 7 girls 12-17, 6 adults, ages not to be named, and went ice climbing, then skied down The river to the Lake.
Several of these girls hade never ice climbed or river skied before, but all kept up great Spirit and made a long but fun day.
So impressed with the kids!

isn't that the truth. I think we've had more hill closures because of warm and rain than we've had actual snow days this winter. It sucks.

Until today ([email protected]!) we had been spared that here in the northern most reaches of the Midwest. Some days around freezing , but no rain before today.
Yesterday I had some nice soft turns in the backcountry, far away from the shore. Close to the shore, it was bad.

I wish I had pictures, but it was a long time ago in a place far away....

I hiked Lion's Head on Mt Washington (north side of Tuckerman Ravine) and skied Raymonds Cataract, finishing by skiing the Cutler River out. It was at times pretty questionable how to proceed as it was a way down to the river and, of course, cold out.

We finally got some snow, so I finally managed to get first ski tours of the season (on 16th of January ). But weather gods wanted to make up for this long wait, so they throw down to us some 60 to 70cm pretty damn good powder. Slightly hard to make skintrack up being first one this early on morning, but well worth it.

When you think nowadays it's impossible to get first line down 2 days after snow on local hill where everyone and their dogs go, Wednesday afternoon brings you nice surprise. Maybe everyone were scared of avi level 4 (no it wasn't anything even remotely dangerous where I was skiing), or yesterday's report on local FB group, from guy who obviously can't differentiate between wet snow and dry powder. Either way, I was happy that for whatever reason, there's was still intact snow there for some really cool run

It's pretty tricky everywhere around here, so there's some digging to do first, before getting into steep terrain loaded with 1.5m of fresh snow But when one option is dig and test, and then ski awesome line, while other option is turning back because you don't know what's under, some 15min of digging is not really a question

I guess it's time to get few steep couloirs, before I go to Dolomites for week of xc skiing

Once it get's to steep, annoying part starts... all my friends are joking that I can easier ski down all that steep shit then climb it up... and it's actually true. While climbing is a little bit fun, I really don't feel too comfortable with crampons and with ice axes in hands.

Especially not at -10c, pretty damn strong wind and for cherry on top, in shadow

But top was nice, just too windy

Ptex doesn't have pores and doesn't take wax in, right? That colored white ptex would most likely disagree

Not me... while he's flying up like wind, I'm still faster downhill, so I had plenty of time to get my gloves off, took my phone out... And even if I'm almost 20 years older, and could almost be his father. But how do they say? The older we get, the more stupid things we do?

I'm pretty sure guy a bit younger then you (I guesS) who more or less kept up with me all the way from car to top of the mountain following me some 50m behind all the way, was thinking too. But with about 25 years more then I am (I actually still think I'm 25, and most of days also feel like that... those other days I feel much older then you are ), I can only say hats off, and I hope I will be able to do your tours in 25 years time.

Pretty much every single one of top 30 men and women xc ski racers are currently in Toblach to get ready for World Champs starting in less then 10 days, so I guess it's just fine to have week of xc skiing in Toblach myself. Maybe they knew I'm going to be here, and they all planned training camps here because of this

It's only first day and first 35km so I'm still flying... will see how it's going to be after 2 or 3 days

But with about 25 years more then I am (I actually still think I'm 25, and most of days also feel like that... those other days I feel much older then you are ), I can only say hats off, and I hope I will be able to do your tours in 25 years time.

The key is practice, practice your steep turns all the time, so you're confident you can do them in the narrowest, steepest couloirs.

Btw, i spent a few weeks in Slovenia, loved it.
