I'm told that all that pain I'm feeling is Lumbosacral Radiculopathy (diagnosis pending MRI results). I knew I had a problem when I had to crawl to the bathroom at night.
Sucks.

Hang in there. The consolation is that it's another messed up season due to c19, so a good one to heal through. Hopefully you can get some treatment for both symptoms and cause.:crossfingers:

I feel ya. Sometimes I'll just be bending over reaching for something and feel a giant POP between my lower back and hip, accompanied by a burning, shock sensation. It can shut me down to barely being able to walk for a week or two, sometimes longer. Let us know how it goes. I'm honestly afraid to take mine to the docs because A), money, B), fear of really bad news, and C) potential surgery putting me offline at my job for too long.

Props for going to get it checked out professionally. Please keep us posted.

Bummer.
I have had some minor back issues that need to be stretched out from time to time. I can't imagine living with it all the time.

The body is a healing machine. Years ago I had back pain, an MRI, diagnosis of herniated discs, etc.
I didn't do anything medically about it and it is long gone. Specialist even told me it was OK to lift weights, including squats and deadlifts. Said the research does not confirm that inactivity is the best thing.

Herniations can resorb. Eat well, low inflammatory food (if possible avoid red meat and processed meats) keep as active as you can, as soon as you can.

Good luck!

Much truth here, although the inflammation promoting red meat thing is far from conclusive. The key element is ...... wait for it ........

Patience!!!! Most common spinal issues, while excruciatingly painful in the acute short term especially with associated muscle spasms, will resolve on their own with time. Obviously, if you are also experiencing loss of motor function, get thee to an ER. And yes, returning to activity is appropriate but with proper caution, including a hypersensitivity to what triggers the problem. Relapses can and will occur if you just immediately slam back to your pre-episode activity as if nothing ever happened - ease into it. And absolutely be prepared for ongoing limitations e.g. I can not do squats and deadlifts, ever. All back issues are not the same.

It's entirely possible that the OP could be skiing again this season, or not.

I feel for ya. Had a herniated disk when I was 30 and same one at 42. I remember how painful it was. So painful that the doc had me on some highly addictive pain meds and I asked for Ambien so that I could get to sleep. I still do the back stretches I learned in PT almost daily and have not had an issue since.

I took a year off skiing that first bout and when I finally skied for the first time the next season my back felt soo much better. Skiing stretched it in all the right ways.

Good luck. If you have to take a year off this is a good one.

My wife has the same issue. 2 years ago she had an "attack" where she was bed-ridden for 3 weeks. I had to physically lift her into the bathroom, and give her sponge baths for that time period. Hers stems from arthritis, combined with some damage from being hit by a car while bike riding about 20 years ago (right at the start of a century around Lake Tahoe, which she completed) She did a steroid injection into the spine in early December, she was hopeful but it seems to not be lasting as long as hoped for. There is some other type of nerve-block that she may try next. The most important thing she has learned to do is listen very closely to what her body is telling her, and at the first since of any "twinge", stop what's she's doing and get off her feet. She's always been the type to push herself, and it has been difficult to change that mind-set.
Here's to hoping for a good outcome :)

Get that book Back Mechanic or look up the author as there’s lots of stuff by him online.

I read this thread a little while ago and thought to myself "I'm glad I don't have any back issues when I ski".

Today I'm sitting out my 2nd day with some sort of lower back thing going on. I know I have a bulging disk but it doesn't usually bother me except for that one time I picked up the newspaper from the driveway and spent the rest of the week on the couch.

I've been nursing this thing for a couple of days now so trying to be careful I did a couple of warm up runs prior to my weekly lesson, got tripped up by a "grooming irregularity" and went down kind of hard. That's what you get when you try to be careful - I had to blow off the lesson and go home. My only real recourse is to not ski for a few days.

Not happy.

After two years of relative remission, tweaked the back/hip issue two weeks ago just pulling my carry on out of the car at the airport. Just now getting back to the point where I can stand up from a chair without using my arms to push myself up. It's always something really simple and unexpected that sends my back in to spasms and takes over a month to recover. Going two years without an issue had me convinced I might actually be doing everything right :-(

That's terrible. I'm so sorry. Just think that next year will be even better.

Do you have any personal experience with this fellow's work? I'm sitting on the couch right now and there's 6" of new snow. I need to get educated quick!

Yeah it made a lot of sense. Walk if possible, but not if pain increases. He’s got stretches in there. He’s got things to do to see what triggers things.
Unfortunately, it will take time to get better too. 12 weeks was thrown out by someone. That turned out pretty accurate for me. I had to bail on going to Abasin maybe 5 weeks after whatever happened that put me on the floor putting my liner on.

I've been sidelined for up to a week before. This time it kind of snuck up on me over a few days time rather than one trigger event. I guess I have time for reading now...

I was previously subscribed to Jeremy Ethier's YouTube channel, I find him to be easy to understand (aside from his millennium mumble) and this showed up in my Back Mechanic google searches. I've been doing these four movements for a few days and I'm seeing some results already. Coincidence perhaps but I'm rolling with it.
