1969. "What are you waiting for?"

My dad (second pic) was another WWII vet who never talked about it. His love of sailing predated and continued after his stint in the South Pacific, but it was pretty clear to me that the war was not something he liked to think about.

Gosh - looking at the pre-1970s pictures of the skis and bindings, I wonder how ANYONE managed to fall without breaking their legs, and given that learning to ski is synonymous with falling pretty much, I'm amazed that there are people on this forum who obviously did learn back then and were not crippled for life such that they are skiing on safer skis and bindings now ...

But at least there weren't any snowboarders to run into you back then.

The first time I skied, in 1975, was on borrowed equipment. Lace up leather boots, skis with screw-on metal edges that were quite a bit above my head, and cable bindings. Yeah, I feel lucky I didn't break anything. I couldn't turn those skis to save my life, but I had a blast on a bluebird day, and the hook was set....

I learned to ski on hand me down equipment similar to @Tony S (no wonder he’s so good ;) ) until I could afford my own in my teens. I had a few sprained ankles & a few broken skis but no broken bones and was probably having as much fun then as I am now :) !
in fact, I still have the pair that I didn’t break…

It was in the 70's that bindings made great improvement. You have to go farther back to say that about falls and breaks.

A lot of the old cable bindings did offer forward release. Lateral or twisting not so much with a bear trap.
As time went by advanced skiers thought turntable heels were the thing which ended forward release, but we had releasable tow pieces (that often released too well).
My first broken bones didn't happen till I was using Look Nevada's, Markers or Soli's. Probably more to do with being an over aggressive teen/young adult. Maybe being 50' in the air, or doing mach speed through the bumps, wasn't a good idea sometimes?
