I more or less copy and pasted my FB post, so obviously the 78th anniversary isn't tomorrow, it was yesterday :) I just read it and it was too late to edit.

My dad graduated from the US Naval Academy class of 1943 and was at D-Day, or at least, very close by. He was a gunnery officer on a destroyer off the coast of Omaha Beach shelling German fortifications during the invasion. For many years he downplayed his participation in that action as just one of many events in a 26 year active duty Navy career. But later in his life (he died in 2013 at age 94) my siblings and I got him to talk more about D-Day, prodding him with the fact that he'd witnessed perhaps the most important single military action in the history of the world.

This is not his ship, but a sister destroyer at Normandy:

About ten years ago I obtained a copy of this print courtesy of my friend @Johnfmh , it's by a famous WWII military artist, Dwight Shepler who also happened to do numerous very nice ski posters before and after the war.

This doc on Dunkirk goes into Hitler’s “secret weapon” against ships early in the war. It was a mine with a special magnetic switch, often dropped from a plane. Luckily for the allies, the Germans dropped one on the coast of England they were able to defuse and then reverse engineer.

They were able to counteract the mines by putting electrical cables around the ship in port and running current through it for a time. This would last for a few months.
Don’t know if they were still doing this in 1944.

On THIS day in history, 2011, @Philpug and I signed the title to our home which is currently the Worldwide Headquarters for SkiTalk.com.
Things have changed a lot in 11 years. Glad we bought it when we did because we couldn't afford to buy this same house today.

LOL grey is the word around here.

Well that pic is 11 years old. He's gotten younger since then.
That was taken after we owned the house for 6 years, so 5 years ago.
But yeah, we're all getting younger, right??
