My first season I rented by the day. My second season I got a season rental from Sports Basement - a sporting goods retailer in California. At the end of the season they offered to sell me the rented pair for $300. The skis were pretty bashed up even at the beginning of the season. I found new pairs of the exact same skis and bindings on line for $325. I pointed this out to them and counter offered for $120. They politely told me to get lost.
