Looks like it was Schiffrin’s first DNF in slalom since Lenzerheide in January 2018.

I’m so so so bummed for Wendy.

Texted with a friend, probably the coach closest to MS, and her family…for decades. Also a “steel trap” memory.

Four DNF’s, three of them straddles in her WC, and OWG SL career. He rattled off the number of starts, even the number of turns! My eyes glazed over. Pretty amazing.

Would have been nice to see her pull that off. She really had it going. IMO her best skiing of the season. I think it could well have been a win.

But PV won. She owns the womens’ SL. NBC might need to edit all of their promo stuff that mentions MS as the OWG gold medal favorite in tech.

Tuesday should be interesting.

Been an odd season, and surely for MS. I still think she has a COVID hangover. And I feel just a lot going on, physically and in her head.

Season is flying by. After Schladming, just two more SL’s. Four GS.

PV, is so consistent. Evidently very strong, physically and emotionally. I believe that Mauro Pini and his team are a great match with her.

We’ll see.

BTW, Paula Moltzan is one tough lady.

I really liked Moltzan since I first noticed her, a few seasons ago. Very strong on working the skis, creating speed, which sometimes gets her into trouble too. I also hear she is a hard worker. Looking forward to ”Flachau”!

It is amazing how the new skis made slalom so much more consistent. It used to be a crap shoot whether any given skier would finish. With the exception of Bode Miller, who had enough DNF's to skew the statistics singlehandedly, it really is a different scene. MK's stats are something I would have never believed possible back when I was struggling to get the 207's through half the races I entered.

I do remember though, when the short skis first came out, one of the most common DNF's was sitting back with insufficient tail behind you, resulting in a full wheelie, landing on the shoulder blades. You don't see that one much any more

Much more exciting race today! I think a lot of us were pulling for Holdener & she really was close but even without the mistakes it is a big ask to top Vlhova when she has a clean run. Shiffrin obviously had it going on for a while in the 2nd run, I guess we’ll never know if it would’ve been enough to take down Vlhova.

Maybe I should be posting this in the MS thread. Maybe I'll post it in both places.
Think about this. Mikaela hasn't DNF'd enough to know what to do when you DNF.
Worth watching this twitter video.

The whole video was neat to watch and the end gave me a good laugh.

FWIW, this is the post Mikaela was referring to:
She really was killing it before the straddle.

Thanks for the reminder that SL used to be turny.
So courses are set these days with much less offset?
There’s no rule on offset, right? Just distance?
What’s caused the shift?

Shiffy (coaches wanting to give their athletes a better chance).
Maybe safety also (limiting the loading up on the shaped skis).
I'm sure there are other (better) thoughts as well.
