I was just taking off some ~10 year old mounts and it seems to have been really popular then.

Eh, too old, too fat, too slow for a platform venue ecosystem chase.

Already set up a test rig, one with and one without VHB; already forgotten which is which.

I always use some form of heavy duty 3M double-sided tape, because, why not?

As I recall..from years ago..there was adhesive on XC bindings for the heel strip, as well as screw. So I'd say yes, probably to maintain alignment..

Was the tape still adhering well or was it no longer functional after 10 years? Or was it a shim?

For the record, I wound up going with this one. It's rated for bonding to topsheets AND metals (read: 75mm, also: powder coated bike frames).

I thought the 1.1 mm spec thickness would be too much but it compresses down just fine and fills in snakeskin-type topsheets.
