I meant it sounded like the fixed grips could run in spite of rime ice, without having to clear it. While the detachables couldn't run until they were cleared.

Exactly. Chair one here gains 2000’ and the mechanics have to scrape every foot of that cable after we get gnarly rime/ice. Lots of work and time!! Ive often wondered if theres a newer/fancier version of chair lifts that can combat the ice themselves??

I’ve heard that Stowe sometimes keeps the lift spinning through the night in order to limit the ice buildup. Can’t say I’ve ever stood there and watched them do it though.

Deep thoughts by Pat*:

10:15 a.m. update:
Chair 8 and the Hellroaring Basin will be closed today. Please note additional terrain closures below in the 8 a.m. update.
It is pretty wet up here. Most of the mountain is in the clouds with about four chairs of visibility. Primary snow conditions are a heavy snow similar to Thanksgiving mashed potatoes. Skis move better across high-up and north-facing groomed slopes. There are a couple creamy turns. Overall, the wet snow is challenging.
8 a.m. update:
All weekday chairs are still scheduled to run. We will be closing a few runs today. Gate 1 accessing parts of the Hellroaring Basin will be closed, including Hell Fire, Picture Chutes, etc. Haskill Slide, Over-the-Hill Gang, Moose, and the East Rim also will be closed. Do not duck ropes and enter terrain only through open gates.
6 a.m. report:
We are seeing rain in the village and sleet at the summit. Yesterday brought heavy snow. Since then, our snow level has been rising, with rain falling on top of new snow. Rain was reported as high as the top of Chair 5. Our summit weather station shows 30 degrees up top with lots of precipitation. There are widespread grooming irregularities across the front side. There is also wind drifting of heavy snow and impacted visibility. Even with the new snow, it is not really a powder day. Perhaps some snowy turns up high, and slushy spring turns down low. It will be challenging turning in the heavy wet stuff.
The forecast calls for rain, sleet and snow this morning. Whether or not our coats are dry this morning, we are going to put 'em right back on and head right back out there! Our weekday chairs and terrain are scheduled to run. Chairs 5 and 8 may be delayed. About 40 lifties and many more mountain employees will be out there because we run this mountain seven days a week — rain, sleet or snow, all winter long! Thank you.

I've known Mt. Baker's site to be brutally honest about conditions. I think it works out for them because you get people pretty upset if you tell them that there is 8" of new and you show up to find that there is also 1/2" of ice on top of it. They might not come back.

Informative descriptions. Pat made this a fun read, even though making the snow fun to ski isn't possible.

Pat is a good barometer. He tells mostly the facts, ma'am, but tries to keep it fun. Hard to complain.

I've got a good friend that did the snow phone back when it was a phone at Mt. Hood Meadows.

He was very regulated on what he said, but had a code for most of us that knew him: If he reported even inches of new snow, skip the rest of the report, and come skiing. If he reported odd inches, don't bother, or at least be warned!

Took 7 years before somebody ratted him out!
