It's taken me til tonight, but I finally picked up a bottle of the Cap Corse Mattei rouge.

I decided that the quinine was too much to use it as a vermouth substitute outright. Instead I ended up with:

3/4 oz Ford's gin
3/4 oz Campari
1/2 oz Dopo Teatro vermouth
1/4 oz Mattei
dash orange bitters
orange slice

Delicious.
No pics?

My first Negroni was made with Aperol and Carpano Antiqua. My son ordered it, hated it, and traded with me. I have not explored the possibilities like you, but these have become a favorite drink in our house!
FYI I like Aperol as a change of pace but my wife really dislikes it. Last month I finally finished that giant bottle I got at Costco.

Love Ford's (right up there with Plymouth, a bit less stately/spunkier).
Been using Citadelle (French) lately, with Carpano Antica and a dash of Peychaud's. C'est magnifique!

Never tried that Cappeletti - what’s that like ?
Have been trying different vermouths (got to be from Torino though) - Vermouth Di Torino is my latest favorite, slightly less rich than Carpano.
Tried Checci also,That was even lighter than the Carpano.
For gin, if not Plymouth, then the old standard Gilbeys - anything London dry.

Interesting....
What is that Ramazzotti like compared to Campari ?
I usually like a bit extra amaro min the mix as well (along with a bit more gin)

It's hard to say since Campari's ingredients are a guarded secret. But Ramazzotti is much deeper on the tongue meaning deep rich cherry tar like, and less alcoholic, and less bitter. There is myrrth, turmeric, absinth, hysso, rosemary, oregano, orange peel, quinne, rhubarb, and gentian in Ramazotti- if that helps.

Yes it helps - that one sounds like it's worth a try. Thanks
