Volkswagen To End Production Of Golf For U.S. Market
Jan 20, 2021
  • Golf first sold in the U.S. in December 1974
  • Nearly 2.5 million Golf family models sold in the U.S. market
  • Production in Puebla, Mexico, ends in January
Herndon, VA — Volkswagen of America announced today that the critically-acclaimed Volkswagen Golf ended production for the U.S. market last week. Volkswagen expects that the model year 2021 Golf models built at the Puebla, Mexico plant will sustain sales of the affordable, European-designed hatchback through year end. The Golf family name will carry on in model year 2022 with the introduction of the all-new Mk 8 Golf GTI and Golf R, arriving this Fall.

“Over four decades, the Golf has delivered a great value to American drivers,” said Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President, Product Marketing and Strategy, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “It exemplified what Volkswagen does best—melding dynamic driving characteristics with purposeful packaging and unmatched quality. While the seventh-generation Golf will be the last of the base hatches sold here, the GTI and Golf R will carry its legacy forward.”

In the U.S., nearly 2.5 million Golf family models have been sold since 1974. A Golf model has earned a spot on Car and Driver’s 10Best list for the last 15 years in a row, and the current-generation Mk 7 Golf was named North American Car of the Year when it debuted for the 2015 model year.

The 2021 Golf is available in one well-equipped trim—the Golf TSI. It features a 1.4-liter turbocharged and direct-injection engine, which makes 147 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The TSI® engine is mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic®, and achieves EPA-estimated fuel economy of 29/39/33 (city/highway/combined) and 29/36/32 respectively.

The value-driven Golf TSI offers a host of standout features. On the exterior, LED DRLs and taillights give an unmistakable lighting signature, and automatic headlights with rain-sensing windshield wipers are standard, as are heated washer nozzles. Golf rides on 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, wrapped in 205/55 all-season tires and features KESSY® keyless access and a panoramic tilt-and-slide sunroof. Inside, premium materials are used throughout the driver-centric cabin, where leatherette steering wheel and seating surfaces and heated front seats are standard. Volkswagen Car-Net® and App-Connect keep drivers connected, and driver assistance features include Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring (Front Assist), Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Traffic Alert.

Pricing for the 2021 Volkswagen Golf with a standard six-speed manual transmission starts at $23,195. The eight-speed automatic transmission starts at $23,995. The destination charge for all Golf models is an additional $995.

I bought my first VW this past weekend. 2014 Passat for my oldest, who’s now a learner’s permit kid and I don’t want her driving my car. Or my wife’s. If the company brought back the Scirocco with a proper 6 speed, I’d seriously consider buying another VW. For me.

It was called the Rabbit here right? Then they had GTI, but Golf was what, 90’s?
I do remember seeing “Golf” in France in probably 1979.

They went to the Golf name for the 1985 model year, with the introduction of the Mk 2 body. We had a 2009 Rabbit, 5 cylinder and automatic. It was fast and smooth, albeit a little thirsty. It was handed down to my daughter, who sold it with over 200K on it, still running strong and reliable. We also had a 2014 Golf TDI, which was a phenomenal car but it was traded in on the recall for a 2017 Alltrack, the first one our dealer delivered. We added a Tiguan to the family about a year ago...love it.

I drove an 81 though the 1990s. It was a pretty high maintenance car but I had a good VW shop nearby. Valve job, CB joints and boots, timing belt, hydrolic clutch were the main things I had to have done on it. CB joints were preventable, but I digress. It was like a thousand dollars every other year with that thing LOL. It was fund to drive though..

Heart be still! "But not GTI and R Models" needs to be added to this thread's title.

The GTI is such an iconic car. I always hoped -- hopelessly -- that VW would give the Golf Wagon the full GTI treatment. I'd buy one today.

Instead, they cancelled the wagon over here...... :(

Have been watching lots of MK8 GTI and Golf R autobahn videos and the new R with DSG is a rocket! With an ecu tune the MK8 Golf R would be INSANE.

Although it’s not quite as big as the Golf Wagon was, the New Mini JCW Clubman or JCW Countryman are fantastic options for smaller sporty station wagons. Proven BMW engines with amazing auto transmissions that accelerate close to Golf R levels.

I had the TDI wagon. After the buy back I went with a 4 door GTI. Yes, it was smaller, but it still worked well. Note that I wasn't carrying a family. Mainly canines, my stuff, etc.

Audi TT RS is on the way. Same platform as the R.

I love the Clubman. I'd at least be test driving the new version, but we recently relocated to an area that is very distant from the nearest BMW store.

Even with it being a pretty easy car to work on, not being close to a dealership you can trust would give me pause on any car. Had 3 Minis myself and all have been reliable. Loving my current tuned 2018 JCW 3 door hardtop the best though.

'22 Golf R to start at $44K
but
...there will be competition in the marketplace coming from Toyota GR Corola Hot Hatch
View attachment 121598

The 2022 Toyota GR hatch is rumoured to start around $30K US with 261hp and FWD but not sure if any will offer AWD like the current GR Yaris overseas. Think that’s a pretty fair price for it.

Based on my experience with the GTI, it had a bit too much HP for a two wheel drive vehicle. I can't imagine dumping more HP on those two drive wheels. It wasn't so much a matter of control in driving mtn roads, but rather HP being wasted on wheel spin when cornering launching etc. In a RWD vehicle you'd have the drama of understeer. In a FWD it just felt like wasted energy.

Still.... an awesome vehicle.

"Supposedly, the GR Corolla will come powered by the same 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine found in the overseas-only GR Yaris. Total output should hit around 161 horsepower and, unlike the Type R, power will be routed to all four wheels instead of just the front two. This all-wheel drive system is also said to have rear-biased torque and limited-slip differentials on both ends could be optional."

Lots of errors in that report as that engine produces 261hp, not 161hp and I’ve seen about 4 or 5 articles on the Corolla GR version and they all seem to say “the AWD of the Yaris GR will not be available on the Corolla GR ”.

Might get lucky but I bet it’s too costly to redesign the Corolla platform for AWD vs just putting the more powerful engine in the existing one.
