Sounds like poorly made base layer.

In a “new to skiing” section, I don’t see this as a must but a maybe. If there’s wrinkles and the base layer hurts, fold it up. Assuming you can and it’s not too tight when folded.
I never ever have base layers in my boots. Socks and foot only!!

Most people starting out are probably going to have plenty of room for a base layer over socks. Just don’t get it all wrinkled.

The number of people that show up with sweat pants, regular pants, and even the stretchy snow cuff crammed inside their boot cuff is large.
