Does it count that Crystal Mountain Michigan was my home mountain [cough]hill[/cough] when I lived there?

above bridal veil a few photos not the best quality but view is uninterupted to Fraser Valley + a shot of the bowl on south side. (imagine I'm pointing at a few peaks we've climbed south side of the border ) believe these were taken mid September - still a few snow patches on south side.

The Ms. and I are heading for our central Oregon property and I am going to sneak in a ski day at Bachelor on Wednesday. It's supposed to be a nice sunny day. Is anybody else thinking the same?

I drove thru Chilliwack yesterday and there was still snow on the upper regions of a lot of the mountains. Not exactly sure which part of the highway was below the proposed Bridal Veil Resort, but the most snow was near Bridal Veil Falls Provincal Park about 18kms east of Chilliwack

If you were heading west Slesse may have been the peak you noticed, it stands out. Always a lot of snow but its a technical climb so not suitable for skiing.
Cheam's north side is mostly vertical and the road is close so you never even notice it travelling west.

heading east Cheam is more noticable. Can't see the bowl from the highway but it might get enough snow to rival Baker and the North Shore

Ok last day @ the bachelor. Outrageous turn out with plenty of costumes and parties. I think there were more dogos than people.

Found a couple of deserted groomers and laid down some fun runs.

Probably my last day today at Crystal (unless they decide to keep Green Valley open for skiing). They opened the gondola at 9 for skiers and boarders as Saturday the lines were long at 10). No problems here at 9:30.

Looks a lot different than the last time I was here earlier in May. 061222CD-9E49-45D5-AA5E-D757B18D45E5.jpeg

Riding over Bull Run some patches of snow. 71CD7980-60FA-42AA-91D2-5E61F4A6A727.jpeg

Fabulous view of Ranier all day. Adams was out as well as St Helens and Baker.

Still lots of snow, great spring skiing all day. E5105681-A971-4C8B-B257-EC24587023E0.jpeg

Snorting Elk/Blazing Elk were great, it was a good idea to traverse skiers right the last 1/3 to avoid the dip and slow run out. A857A07B-2192-4F61-A399-B77F88CBFCF1.jpeg

Lunch was a gyro on deck chair. 82265C62-6E2A-48C8-819A-3ED074C9598C.jpeg

Another weekend coming up:

WELCOME TO JUNE
After a great summer opening weekend with lots of fun under the sun, we have even more to be stoked about... Green Valley will be open for another bonus weekend of skiing and riding, June 4-6!

Explain? Why the two sets?

A handful of sites quote a 5:1 ratio of weight-on-back vs weight-on-feet regarding energy expended: a pound on your feet is equivalent to five pounds in your pack. This was just a test of that theory. 5:1 seems like a huge ratio, but if it is true it probably means we'd be better off with different skis for the up and the down. My Monsters + boots is 25lbs, my Fischer Jr skis and boots are 4lbs. The adjusted total weight is 25 + 4 * 5 = 45 lbs. If instead I were to just have a single ski for both up and down, the best I could do would be a ski + boot combination of 9 lbs, which has the same adjusted weight of 45 lbs. But there is no way a 9 pound setup would perform as good as the Monsters + Alpine boots.

Again, it's just a theory, but I found it intriguing.

Also, I chose the Monster as a bit of a statement. It was the biggest, heaviest plank I could find.

Since Crystal announced they were open again this weekend, I figured today was the best day, since it might rain Sat/Sun. The sun was out with a cloud cap over Rainier. 31B2382F-54D5-4598-8C8B-BBB9647D7B99.jpeg

There was a lot less snow than just Monday, 4 days ago, when there was snow up the paved path off the gondola. You had to climb down the steps, or walk around in front of Tower 16 to get to a spot to click in. 28A69D9A-AD3A-4DCE-91F1-2F4B89093511.jpeg

Patrol was shoveling snow to make sure the entry to Snorting Elk was feasible, and it still took side stepping up a dozen or so steps. 7DC5ED05-60DA-44D8-B32D-E80495E9C2DD.jpeg

The pond is starting to form, though you simply can’t get enough speed to pond skim. 37ECC31F-93FC-4B17-ADF9-FEA661B2A325.jpeg

Overall the skiing wasn’t bad, but there were a lot more bottleneck spots with exposed rocks and dirt. 76AFD682-0A0A-48CB-B2E3-28F0F53CCBAD.jpeg

Just a little lower, it’s a lot more bare, a big change from last week. 423A288C-2F86-4382-BD0B-EAB7EDB5BC7F.jpeg

I only skied for a couple hours. There were no lines to speak of and for what terrain was left to ski, I got a lot of turns in a short time. The snow was OK, and you had to watch out for rocks. I think I’m done for the season, for real this time. Still, I was able to ski every month from November to June, 8 months!
