Tips To Target drill, skier 3

Run3.gif

This is a skier who started learning moguls this season and had never skied bumps before. This is after a couple of weeks working on fundamentals, and is I think Day 2 of working on tips-to-target. This is a nice solid consistent section - Good work & progress by this skier in just a short time.

What you can't hear in the GIF version is at the end of the run, a little girl's voice riding the lift behind the camera, out of sight goes "Daddy, that guy's good at moguls!" :) :)

Cool drill to help give peeps consistency & feel & build the turn technique.

Are you really putting marks on the mogul with a ski pole? Ever try the blue dye from the race dept? I tried to use Gatorade once on trail but it’s too light.

The GIFs are a little choppy so what you lose is the really smooth, intentional continuity that both skiers are able to achieve. But the gifs came out pretty reasonably

Yes, just scratch the targets in the snow with a pole.

Chuck Martin's point is to get the knowledge (or "sight picture") into the mind & eyes of each skier so the skier internalizes the Feel of the target & turn. Don't need or want a persistent mark on the snow

HIGHLIGHT - one really cool thing that you can see even in the somewhat choppy gif vids is the definite Hit as the skiers hit each bump, and how consistent that is from bump to bump. This is also where they start their weightshifts. <which is just a little Late, but that's the next step>

@recbumper thanks for putting these together. Over the past few years, there have been repeated 'asks' to show a novice bumper skier (but advanced skier) who has done all the groomer work on short turns take that work into the zipperline as a novice bumper. What does this even look like? What sort of terrain is good? These videos help answer that.

Highlight 2 - skiing THROUGH the mogul. Another highlight here and a major good result of the tips-to-target drill is that it teaches from a very early stage to ski Through the mogul, not <gag, choke, yeckk> :( around :( it

Vid problem - Another bummer part of the GIF vid is that my Allman Brothers tie-dye t-shirt didn't come thru. Oh well! Hahaha

< Cause time goes by like hurricanes >

Here's the audio for Skier 3's run. The little girl's voice is too funny right at the end. :) :) "Daddy, that guy's good at moguls!"

I couldn't figure out how to post the audio but I think the zip might work.

@recbumper - good to see the moves in action.

The skiers seem to be using a wider stance in the bumps. Any particular reason for that?

These folks are already solid but they are relatively early in their learning progression. They are not yet fully committing the weight 100% to each new ski ("new downhill ski," "new outside ski"), which causes A-framing.

The next step for each of them is to go back to the flats for a good chunk of time and get comfortable making the full 100% commitment of weight to each new ski. Fully Committed at the Top of each turn, way before the fall line. It's usually really scary for the body to Commit Early & Fully, and the brain hates it and tries to share weight betw feet so you have to fight your own brain & fear, so it takes a fair amount of practice.

They will be working on drills like the Mogul Wedge, Mogul Quick Wedge, Early Javelin Turn (uncrossed), and Freedom Of Center -- probably in that order -- to get comfortable & muscle memoried for the full commitment to the new ski.

Yeah in that video around the 1:04 mark you can see multiple turns on a single bump 'spine.' And again around 1:40, there's a sequence where the skier does multiple turns on a single bump a few times. Very cool video. I was unable to find a video showing multiple turns on a bump otherwise!

Narrator talks specifically about trying to ski just the tops of the moguls and make as many turns on the tops as possible.

Know at least one CSISA guy who passed his L4 with the bump mantra of "two turns per bump".

Here's another take on quick turns on a bump. Section 8 Snowsports.

There was a good one in a Chuck Martin vid where he demo-ed how to ski a steep pitch in one of his workshops. Can't find it now so the vid may have been withdrawn. My memory is that he did a very quick rotate of the skis each way, pivoting around the center of the ski with a straight body and a lot of hip involvement. Memory may faulty of course but it was a neat move.
