One of my best ski friends is like this. He's an amazing skier and wants to be meditative in his skiing. For a while I listened to music while out cycling, it seemed to help me but then I realized that having buds in my ears was not a good thing out on the road. So I stopped.
When on the slopes I think of the sound of my skis, the beauty of the mountain and the zen of the fall line. Music plays no part in any of this.
I know Michael Kang, Mando and fiddle, was a ski patroller somewhere. The Cheese got their start playing at ski resorts for lift tickets. They did a tour of Tahoe / California ski resorts in the late 90s.
Sometimes I like the energy from the music. But when the powder is falling all around me, the muffled silence of the mountain is perfect. For a while I listened to music while out cycling, it seemed to help me but then I realized that having buds in my ears was not a good thing out on the road. Oooh! Kashmir is an excellent call.
Blue Oyster Cult-Godzilla, and Aerosmith-Sweet Emotion really remind me of skiing because those are two songs I listed to on my Astraltune, the 1970’s technical marvel that predated the Sony Walkman. It was basically a car cassette player in a padded case that you wore across your chest attached with waist and shoulder straps. Did anyone else have an Astraltune?
Stop Making Sense was the first Talking Heads record I got into. To this day I like the live, revved up versions better than the original recordings. Burning Down the House and Once in a Lifetime especially. Both are excellent choices.
Thx, yeah. I want to ski/ski-tour there!Oooh! Kashmir is an excellent call.
And Roundabout: The Mountains Come Out of the Sky and they STAND THERE!
I understand this, and this was how I felt about it when I was cycling. But given the importance of situational awareness that I feel is necessary when on the road, I prefer the sound of the what is happening with my bike, the road and the wind and my response to it all. I feel the same on the mountain. With regards to music, my mind can carry a tune in a more connected way when I am cycling, skiing or making love. And mind you, I feel a deep connection with music when I am listening whcih is why I prefer to separate it from other things that I enjoy with a deep connection...Sometimes I like the energy from the music. But when the powder is falling all around me, the muffled silence of the mountain is perfect.
