We put up a hummingbird feeder about a week ago. We've been getting lots of customers... and some guarding behavior.

Somehow my patio is like Grand Central Station for mantises this time of year. Had about a dozen last night. The poor cat is sleeping through the days after stalking mantises all night.

That looks like a full grown moose. At this time of year, were it a male, it would have antlers.

Remember back when it was OK to use "man" for all humankind?
That's like using "he" for all living non-human beings, assuming that it's OK to leave out any reference to the females. This verbal habit frustrates me.

I say this knowing that some of you may find my stance on this issue to be trivial, offensive, self-righteous, or unduly picky. So be it.

Would that be the same era in which females were identified (valued) by their marital status?

So... Mrs. Moose?

Really???

I've done a little more googling and the face is dark which would suggest a male. A Yearling is in his second year and pretty well grown. They would only have vestigial antlers.

More to the point, I'm asking a friend with decades of experience big game hunting in Colorado for his opinion.

Went on a little nature walk today at Huntley Meadows park, which has a wetland and boardwalk through it... lots of frogs and snapping turtles around today, a couple of great blue herons, and some other marsh birds, like the greater yellowlegs in the last pic.
