Preview: 2025 Salomon Strive 16 MN 747 Edition

Salomon introduced the Strive collection of bindings for the 2023 season (Preview HERE). It was immediately acknowledged that the brand was all in with the new design and that the Warden as well as Sth2 bindings had a short future from that point. Salomon was adamant that the new Strive design’s significantly lower center of mass (COM) in the toe was a far superior design and would create a better skiing experience. While the Warden wasn’t as popular or well received as the patriarch of the Salomon binding lore, the “Driver” toe, and would not be missed, the Driver faithful were distraught that the Strive was going to replace their beloved Sth/Sth2 bindings. That is where the discontent came from. Well, for the Driver faithful and us old timers, Salomon is offering a version of the Strive that could appease many of the stalwarts with a new variant of the Strive, the Strive 16 MN 747.

A few years ago we, we as in me, asked Dave Petersen, our in-house graphic designer, to do the heavy lifting and create some mock ups of some Driver bindings that Salomon could easily do for their 75th anniversary. The designs that I asked Dave to create mock ups were from three different decades: the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. These included the first Salomon single pivot Driver model, the 727 Equipe, the very well best selling of all the Drivers ever, the 1984 747 Equipe, and lastly the 997 Equipe, the most popular Salomon from the 90s when Salomon came out with their skis. With the Driver near the end of its lifespan, we thought the retro concept was dead because we were told that Salomon didn’t want to live in the past. This and that the Strive’s carbon infused poly-amide body needed to stay black and could not change pigment, may have been said to throw us off the path. While that might have been the case initially, it is obviously not the case now.

The new Strive 16 MN 747 is one of the best homages we have seen. Considering the toe is obviously a different shape than the original, I have to say the results are as good as can be expected. Congrats to the team at Salomon for coming out with this design. I believe it is going to be one of the more popular and sought after bindings for this coming season. We look forward to seeing this white and red beauty out on the slopes.

I have worked in various ski shops from suburban to ski town to resort, giving me a well-rounded perspective on what skiers want from their gear. This might be the only Strive I will consider owning...

I mostly ski attacks or pivots but was considering strive for my next ski. What do you think is wrong with them? I really like the forward pressure adjustment on these. I adjust bindings between different boots for myself (working versus not working) and the kids (I want the "good" skis since my sister isn't home) all the time. Anyways, I might need to get the 747s.

There is nothing "wrong" with the Strive; I simply prefer the bombproof nature of the Sth2-16.

There is nothing that we hae seen so far that shows that the Strive toe will be less bombproof (yet) than the Sth2 Driver toe. Heels are the same.

I mainly ski pivots, but have had no issues with my strive demo binding. Only minor complaint is the heel is harder to get pop in when compared to the pivot. But it's not that difficult compared to other bindings like the attacks. I would get another strive if I didn't already have a bunch of pivots waiting for new homes/skis

I am trying to decide which skis to put mine on ... decisions ... decisions ....

Dag nabbit. Now I have to buy a new pair of skis so I have somewhere to put these. Preferably something orange to put next to my beloved Mark IV Comps with 747s...

Not kidding.

Having two of the same colors does not make this look anything like the epic Salomon 727 Equipe. The toe piece is particularly ugly. Plus it appears to be completely plastic fantastic as well. As such it is not a TEAM race binding by any measure. So putting a replica body on a VW chassis does not a Ford GT make!

I've got to call this one a missed opportunity. Does Salomon even make a RACE binding anymore?

Icon 24 and Icon 30 are pretty serious race bindings.
With those ridiculous DIN numbers you might just as well nail your boots in! Not surprised they don't even show them on their website. Back in the 80's you had race metal bindings that started in the 4-6 DIN low end and went up to a 13-15 up top. Useful for all skiers if they wanted the quality, performance and durability. (though Marker always seemed to need more than many others for adequate retention...)

You asked if they even make a race binding and I answered it. ;) There is a Icon 16 version coming too. I have some Icon 12's that go on their race plates but they are not what I would consider a full (adult) race version. Before you get all up in arms, the 24 and 30 heels are not metal housed but carbon enfused composite ... they are good enough for Marcel, Mikeala and Atomic/Salomon's top racers so...

Finally saw these in person and nearly left the store with them. Its a match up between these and the Henrik Harlaut Pivot 15s for my next ski.
